Stupid Question Time...

My 86 Max wagon still feels sluggish... almost like it's
pulling a loaded trailer all the time.

I've tuned it up with new plugs (NGK V-Power), new Nissan
cap and rotor, new plug wires, new coil (replaced last
winter due to a no start condition), & checked timing.

The rear motor mount was replaced due to the rubber bushing
being broken.

The exhaust is new (I do have a test pipe to put in place
of the cat, haven't had a chance to put it on yet).

I have also replaced the AFM with one from a parts car, no
change bad or good.

I replaced the AIV valve with one from a parts car and fixed
an issue there, but no help in the power department.

I have also installed a K&N air filter in the stock air box.

It always feels like something is holding the car back...

It takes the car a while to get to speed, and when I let
off on the gas pedal, the car slows down some, it doesn't
feel like it "rolls" very easily.

I had the brakes done a while back and have taken it back
to the shop twice because it feels like the brakes are on
slightly, but the shop tells me all is well.

I normally do all my own work, but I didn't have time last
fall when the brakes were due to do them myself.

I still want to check them out myself as the rear brakes
squeak quite a bit from time to time... I'm wondering if
the emergency brake might be on slightly.

The car doesn't pull right or left while driving or braking,
so I don't think I have a caliper that's hanging up on the
front end.

Also, I do remember the car having this issue when I took
it for the first test drive last September before I bought
it. I figured that with a V6, there's probably some sensor
wrong somewhere and when I found it, this thing would rock.

One thing that is weird is that if I use the cruise control
on the highway, it has a lot more pep when I use the accel
switch of the cruise versus the foot pedal...

I've checked the distance the TB moves using the foot feed,
it stops about an inch away from the throttle stop on the TB.

If I move the throttle by hand, it moves the full distance.

I've adjusted the throttle cable as tight as I can get it
without pulling the throttle off of idle.

It's just really strange that engine has more pep using the
accel switch of the cruise control versus the foot feed.

Any ideas???

Thanks!
Scott

I would stick the catalytic converter test pipe on and see if that helps. I had an old Volvo 740 turbo that died one day and wouldn't restart and it ended up being a clogged converter. It ran much better after I replaced it. The turbo worked better too. My teenage son then promptly ran it into a pine tree and bent the frame, hood, fender... I sold it for parts, but I'll always remember the hours I spent troubleshooting, only to fix it by unbolting the converter and having it start right up!

Re: Stupid Question Time...

Scott,
Don't check the accel cable at the throttle, check it at the cam join, under the black plastic at the dead center of the firewall. Remove the plastic, and you will see three cams...one for the accel cable, one for the cruise cable, and one to actually work the throttle. The accel cable may need some adjustment here...or it could also be stretched some, and require a replacement...
