having a hard time getting to the oil filter on my 88 maxima... according to the manual it's right next to the belts, but i can see it by just looking in.. was curious if someone could explain it in detail, or point me to a picture that shows it better. thanks

They diagram you are seeing is for a 3rd gen 89 + model...
the 85-88's had the filter on the mid-point side of the block, on the firewall side of the engine. if you look under the car, you will see the crossmember that runs front to rear under the engine...the oil filter is almost directly above it, on the firewall side.
Some people can reach it better from the top, and others do better from the bottom...this layout is the largest pet-peeve of the car from just about everyone I've seen talk about it...

Yeah, the oil filter is in a nasty location for this car. I personally have a better time trying to get the filter from under the car than from above. Also keep in mind, it's almost near impossible to change it with out dumping oil all over the place.
