AAV replaced...still high idle

I just replaced my AAV, and as of now I cannot tell any thing positive. I have not reset the ecu however....do you need to do that? I did not have enough time to do that on my lunch break. And if not any other ideas on why the car is idling around 1100? it is a 87 SE.

I say the next thing you do is turned down the idle and see where that gets you. There is a procedure in the Haynes/Chilton/FSM that will tell you all that's needed to adjust the idle. 1100 rpm isn't too bad, my car gets around there sometimes. You can probably turn it down just a hair and be fine.

are you talking about adjusting one of those two screws on the top-passenger side of the engine by the firewall? my idler is up around 1000 these days, I've tried adjusting the one that directly affects the idle, and it seems to work for a little while, but it eventually gets back to idling higher than normal. Sticker under the hood says ~750-800 (I believe) is normal, dont remember if thats with the AC on or off though. I think it might be my throttle cable not tightened correctly. I've never reset my ecu before though, and I have a different intake on there now. Does reseting the ECU really make that much of a difference? I'm getting ~110miles to a quarter of a tank on the highway since putting the K&N cone filter in, dont want to reset the ECU if its going to mess up that mileage.

Keep in mind you can't simply turn the screw. There are a few steps you need to do in order to change it, like disconnect the idle up solenoid etc. It's all outlined in the service manuals.

you could try a fuel injector cleaner. Clean air filter helps too, and no 'hot rodding' ^_^ That mileage is on a 250+ mile highway trip though (its just below half a tank when I reach my destination). But I still average ~300miles to a tank if I'm in town and driving it normally (little to no fast starts @ lights)

You guys are fairing better than me, I average about 250 miles a tank in town 6 miles round trip , keeping mind that the 85-86's have smaller fuel tanks. I tend to lead foot it a lot, but that's because I love the sound of my intake! When my car was getting driven on the freeway on a regular basis, I was seeing as much as 325-350 a tank, adding about 11-12 gallons per fill. My best recorded mileage was about 29.5 mpg, right now I'm seeing about 21mpg which is about where this car should be...all in town. Also keep in mind, sometimes I go almost 2 weeks on a tank of gas too if I'm not driving around too much!

I have already run to different fuel injector cleaners....I have only filled the car up 3 times....the first time I used 93 octane, then 89, and yesterday I put in 87....I also changed the fuel filter yesterday, and I did the air filter the day I got the car, so hopefully things will turn around for the better. About my driving style...I really take it easy on my 87....I have not spun out other than to check the clutch before I bought it....and I dont gun it off the line, and I usually shift around 2500-3500. I put in about 13-gallons of gas yesterday and only got 250 miles on the tank (not)

My buddy has an 87 Pathfinder that was getting horrendous gas mileage, it's a five speed, same vg30 engine. It turns out it was his oxygen sensor. A lot of people forget that it has a direct bearing on your engines mixture. He put a new one in and it gets much better mileage now, it was running too rich.

That was my first though...but does the ecu throw a code for the O2 sensor? I checked my ecu and I did not get a code for a 02 sensor...let me know if this is not the case.

the ECU throws a code for the sensor, sure...but if the sensor is providing a faulty signal that is within the pre-programmed "OK" range, no code will appear on the ECU...

I average around 320 a tank. After fixing my high idle, wich was at 1.6. I replaced the tps. It now sits at 1.1 and 700 when it has load. I disconnected the Fast Idle Control Device and air regulator.

having a high idle? I had an idle of about 1200-1500 this past summer in my ever-loved 88 SE, and drove myself insane trying to find it, cos it was also killing gas. after turning the idle screw completely down and partially retarding the timing, taking ECU codes left and right, I decided to replace all my vacuum lines, even if they didn't look bad.

the next time I fired it up.... it ran fine. needless to say I had to turn the idle back UP to get it from 500 to 750..... but that was the problem. a cracked vacuum line way down underneath everything.

try it! vacuum lines are relatively inexpensive.
