Fuel Pump Hum -1987 Maxima (5 sp Manual)

I recently had to replace the Fuel Pump Pressure Regulator on my vehicle. By the way I have 270,000 original owner miles on this baby. I utilized new injector hose(s) and clamps to complete the install. The vehicle started up fine but the I now hear a constant hum that I believe to be the "Fuel Pump". What do I need do to to make the hum go away? Did I mess up something when I installed the new Fuel Pressure Regulator? Is it safe to drive with the noise or do I have an imminent disaster pending if I do drive it in the current condition?

Did you verify that everything was connected back properly? Did you get all the vacuum lines plugged up etc? If so, then it could possibly your fuel pump going bad. Is the humming really loud? I know mine hums for a little while, but then gets quiet as the motor warms up. I would just keep driving, and if the pump gives out, just replace it I suppose.

I know when my fuel pressure reg went out it made the fuel pump whistle.I don't think you can put them in wrong there are only 4 hoses and a temp sensor and the hoses are bent in the direction they need to go.

True, just was a thought though. Either way guess we're gonna have to see what happens.

Well I started driving it today and we will see what happens. The reason I replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator in the first place was not because of any hum from the Fuel Pump, but because the black connector to Fuel Temp Sensor had become corroded and actually broken off/away. The car was idling very rough as a result. I had to buy the whole Fuel Pressure Regulator assembly in order to get the accompanying Fuel Temp Sensor. I had to discard the original black connector to the original Fuel Temp Sensor and as a result I just have its single wire now connected to the Fuel Temp Sensor (electric tape secures it in place through the sensor's electrical connector loop). Since putting the new regulator on though the Humming began and has not subsided. Maybe messing with the system stressed the old Fuel Pump that was hanging in there and pushed it past it's limit.

Anyone have a suggestion as to where I can find the best deal on a 87 Maxima Fuel Pump, I think I am going to need one soon.

Well you could look on ebay every now and then. However your local parts store would be a good bet.
Also are you planning to mod your car? If so, you could install a walbro high flow pump if your were planning any FI..

Sarin,

Do you run a Walbro pump on your car? If so, what changes did you notice?

I've seen thos pumps on Ebay from time to time and thought about getting
one... I'd like to replace my car's injectors with some performance units and
was thinking that the added fuel pressure would be nice.

Would the the stock fuel pressure reg be enough to work with a Walbro pump?

Thanks!
Scott

Yes the regulator did take care of the rough idle. I bought the regulator online at http://www.nissanpartsdistributor.com/ at a price of $73.67
