What could cause hi readings of HC at idle?
Hey, I just had my car's emissions tested yesterday.
They did a Driving Test
Hydrocarbons passed
Carbon Monoxide passed
Oxides of Nitrogen passed
Then on to the idle test
Hydrocarbons maximum allowable = 108, my reading 217, average passing reading was 22!
Carbon Monoxide passed
The little booklet they gave me try's to narrow down where my problem might lie. One of the things listed was the o2 sensor. I have owned the car for 2 years without replacing it, and put a good deal of km's on it. The manual says to change it every 30,000 miles. Could this be my problem? I have been having some problems with my idle (which could go along with this diagnosis) as its been running sometimes as low as 500rpms without load, usually 600, and underload at 800 (which should be the normal, correct?)

Thanks for any help

Ah, you gotta love Aircare! NOT! But anyways, it very well could be the o2 sensor. It's job is to send the signal to the ECU so it can determin the proper fuel mixture. My buddy had the same prob with an 88 Pathfinder and it was his o2 sensor. You might want to get it on a scope though before you start throwing money at the problem though. There is a good guy in Langley that my friends and I go to, look him up, Build-It automotive.

What'd I try before replacing the O2 sensor is a two things. First, check the ECU, see if its throwing any codes of any sort. Then pull out the O2 sensor and clean it up with some brake cleaner, put back in and see what happens. As for the O2 sensor, it doesn't need to be replaced every 30k miles, it needs to be checked every 30k miles.
