Back when my max would overheat, a small fan would turn on after I turned off my car and blow through a duct to my intake, what's the purpose of this fan, and do I really need it?

Injector cooling fan. Designed to keep the injectors cool when shutting off the motor and prevent fuel boil off. You should leave it alone if you have it.
