Can anyone with a manual max help me?

I need to know how the shift rod and support rods lay. Is there a metal piece that the support rod is supposed to be connected to? I did a swap and am not sure if its a 3rd gen or 2nd gen tranny. Came off an 85 max that had custom mounts. It did not have that metal support for the support rod. The haynes and chiltons both show a metal piece thats connected to the support rod. Right now, my support rod sits longer than the shift rod. Is that how its layed out on your cars? ANY HELP IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED..by the way my car makes that grinding noise on 1st and 2nd gear. Am replacing the master cylinder and rebuilding the slave cylinder tomorrow. Thanx in advance.

The support rod shoud connect to the the tranny, and the base of the shifter assembly. There should be a bracket which the shift itself sticks through the middle of the support rod. It should bolt to just above the shift point on the tranny IIRC.
