Stick shift problems (position?)

When I got my transmission from the junk yard..the 85 maxima did not have a bracket that holds the stick shift in place. Instead it had a hole in the body. I forgot if the base of the stick shift is supposed to be sitting in the floor of the body or under the floor.(in the hole) I am having an issue of it sometimes it lets go of 1st gear. I had it all the way to the top and my gears wouldnt grab..I lowered it and it grabs but it still spits out 1st gear sometimes. Can anyone tell me where the base is supposed to be placed? I have to weld it to wherever its position is. thanx
