1st Gen Audio Question...
#2
Do you have the 8 speaker system in yours? My speakers were 5 1/4" fronts and 6 1/2" rears. The tweeters are 3" I think.
I installed 6 1/2" Peerless woofers an 50mm tweeters all around... and it sounds AWESOME. I am still working on installing the custom crossovers, and this summer an 8" sub. I have been doing frequency response testing all along the way, and will have tons of data available soon.
If you're not in too much of a rush, I'm working on posting the pictures of my audio install on my website. They should be up by the end of the week.

That should be about right, thanks! Sounds like you're gonna have one hell of a system, good luck with that! Would you happen to know the wiring for the car's radio harness? I just bought a Scosche connector and... well surprise!, it doesn't fit Most of the wires are black coming from the car, and the ones from the old radio are not standardized... I think? Still trying to get this damn headunit in!

how do you get the original radio out?
I just started the audio installation on my 84 Maxima.
The lower center console came out easy (tape deck) but the upper radio portion seems to be held in pretty good. I started taking out the whole glovebox and dash on the passenger side to see if I could get at the bolts from the side. Well, I couldn't even get it out still!
Where should I begin before I break something?
i'm going to install a standard size CD player where the factory radio goes.
I have 6" round for the doors and 6x9s for the rear deck. That should fit fine.
i have a harness that says it fits all Nissan cars 1982-94. It worked on my 1994 altima but is nothing like the 84 Maxima plugs.

oh! The radio is held in by only two screws.... follow this:
pull off the ***** for the heater/ac control
remove the face for the heater/ac control (it clips on you can pull it off gently)
there are two screws.. one just above the left top and one just above the right top of the radio. undo these screws, and the radio will pull straight out!!

Haven't gotten around to figuring out the radio harness... if you have the info, it would save me a lot of trouble! I was going to go ahead and test the wires manually, but since you seem to have it already, I can wait I'm in no rush, so take your time too. I've got everything stripped out, waiting for replacements now Tip on removing the A/C Face, use a flat head screwdriver to pry the left and right most sides without breaking it... that's how I did it. I almost dismantled the whole dash too! LOL

Radio Connection:
6-Pin Connector (colors on CAR side of connector):
Black - Ground
Blue/Yellow - Memory
Blue/White - Power
Blue - Antenna
Green/Blue - Not Used
Green/White - Not Used
8-Pin Connector (Speakers... colors on RADIO side of connector)
White Pair - Right Rear
Green Pair - Left Rear
Blue Pair - Right Front
Yellow Pair - Left Front
I always connect the wire with the stripe to the negative side, that way I never mix up and hook anything up out of phase. The connector from the radio for the speakers should be correct, but if your radio does not have those colors, I can check a couple other spare radios around here, but I'm pretty sure they are all the same.

Thanks! Now I just need to wait for my speakers to come in... I'm gonna go ahead with 5.25 Fronts and 6x9 Rear just cuz I don't want a sub and need my bass
Hmm... just took another look at the harness. Here are the colors I have to work with from the Radio, lol:
5-Pin Connector (6, but 1 is missing):
Green
Green/Yellow
Red/White
Blue
Black
8-Pin Connector:
White
Grey/White
Yellow/Red
Yellow/Black
Blue/Red
Blue/Black
White/Black & Grey/Black seem to loop back into another pin (common ground?)
The main car harness wires are black, so I must wire the harness up from the old radio (which I cut off).
