Try Cobymoby. He sells intakes and parts for the 4th 5th gen guys. I believe he sells "can" style filters with a 3" opening. Maybe Sarin can chime in to see if one of those will fit.

Pic. Sarin should chime to advise if he thinks it's too wide or not.

The one Jeff posted may work, but they seem on the big side to me, which may cause the splash shield to bulge. When I home today, I will be pulling my filter out, getting pics as well as try to find a P/N. That one works awesome!

yeah I have already checked those out...I will just order one by measurments I think will work rather then a part number....oh well, thanks for your help

................................I got pics, but they are at home. My DSL went down yesterday and hasn't come back up. It's odd.
Anyway here is what I found: F029A4 was the number I found on it. Not sure if it's a part number or not.
Measurements, the inner diameter of the hole that goes over the pip is 3". The widest part of the filter is 4". the narrowist part is 3". From widest, to narrowest, the filter is about 5 3/4" long. Hope that helps a little.

Edit...here are the a couple pics:

man....I posted this earlier and I guess the post did not go thru. But to answer your question, Yes. The CAI is in! I worked on it this past Sunday. Everything was easy other then the fenderwell.....cutting over and over again try to make it fit....and the dremel cut off wheels break very easily....but they do work. I should have been more patient on my filter purchase because although the filter I got is a nice K&N it is still a little big and makes my fender lining bulge out a little. Also I dont think in my 87SE we actually need the small Vacuum fitting...I cannot find a small vacuum hose that was getting metered air before the install. Sarin told me that his goes to the charcole canister so I hooked mine up like that but it does not look like that is where it is suposed to go. I will post pics soon.
Performance-I am very happy with this intake as far as performance, this is the first intake I have had that I actually feel a power difference with (and no I am not confusing noise with power...I have had lots of intakes) It now pulls harder from off the line all the way to redline.
Sound-The sound is nice. Though its not super loud. Compared to my Injen on my fourth gen, this one just purrs like a kitten. It does make a wicked whistle until your really hammer down. After I get to about 4K it gets more audible and has a louder growl. Mind you I am compairing this CAI to my fourth gen set up which is extremly loud under WOT.
Overall-I am very happy with the quality of the work that jeff did on the piping. The only problem I am having is the filter is a little too big and that is my impatient fault. A big thanks to Jeff and Sarin for all there work and help, and also everyone else on the board. Please post if you have any questions, I will try to take some pics tonight and have them up tomorrow.

Werd!
Though it wierd yours is quieter than a 4th gen with intake. Most of the guys here think mine is louder than most 4th gens.
Either way can't wait to see pics!

you have never heard and injen on a fourth gen if yours is louder
Or else mine is not as loud as yours....I mean its loud, but my injen on my fourth gen sounds like someones head is getting ripped off

hehe I've installed an Injen on a 4th gen. I could swear, it's quieter than mine! Your gonna have to get some vids of it!Originally Posted by cardana24

ok I will try to do a compairson at some point....though I am not sure on how to post them on line. Also I have still not gotten around to taking pics....I was at a meet this weekend in NJ, so I did not have any time for it....I am not working my second job tonight so I should have a chance to snap a few pics
Got pics yet?
I'm gonna keep bugging you! I want to see how it turned out! Also did you figure something out on the small fitting?
Jeff, I forgot to ask you today, you still have that other mid pipe? I wanted to see what you did for the small vacuum fitting.

There are some small hoses that go right below your throttle body housing. Are those the ones you are talking about? Its hard to explain. I didnt know hoses went there until I put my finger on these two hosees and felt some suction.
I just realized I may not be able to do the CAI mod. Drainage here sucks. I already posted about what happened to my car when it rained here not too long ago on the yahoo group site and I did not even have a CAI. I may just have to go with the pop charger style method. Ive been pondering this for a while and with the flooding of the streets that form here. My engine would be through with pretty quick.
Cardena24- nice 2nd gen max. It looks really good! What type of piping did you guys use to fit all of the hoses on? I know our 2nd gens, with the way our oem intake system works, we have I think one or two more hoses to connect to the aftermarket piping.

Well, I living up here, I know rain and puddles to no end. When we had some good rain here with plenty of flooding on the streets, my car still ran fine. Plus my filter still sits higher than the bottom of the bumper. Again it's really common sense with puddling water. The splash shield in the fender well provides good protection, but if the water is deep enough to reach your bumper, just have a flat head screw driver to unhook your piping. Also, though a Pop charger will give you some gains, I personally had too many problems with heat soak when I had mine. I've yet to have heat soak problems with my CAI I have now. But that's me, I'm just trying to help Jeffy out here.

Doesn't AEM make a bypass for CAI? So if your car hits a puddle you won't suck up the water.
I think they cost like 50-90 bucks, depends on where you get them.

yes they do....when they get H20 in them they just block the intake pipe and suck non filtered air ....it is an option but I have read they negate any performance gains you may realize from a cai
Werd, it's lookin good Carson!
drj, yeah you can get the bypass valve...but really if you think about it, it's all common sense when it comes to things like that really.

If you hit a puddle of water the last thing you'd be thinking of is performance.
You'd just pray that the car won't die.(happened to a guy I know)
Yeah maximase86 your right but sometimes no matter what kind of fore thought you put into something isht happens.
If you want to get crazy you could have a y pipe intake. One for CAI and the bypass, the other short air ram. I've seen one in a magazine, im not sure how they regulated it so the SAR would only come on if the CAI was off.
That would be cool.

That would be far too much work and piping to work with. Plus that would probably negate the benefits of either intake IMHO. As for **** happening, yeah it does, I know when I see large puddles I try to avoid them if I can. If not, I slow down pull over, either get an idea of how deep it is, or turn around and go another way. Also at the same time, as I pointed out on the reply to Q, these CAI's, the filter sits a little above the bumper as well. So it would have to be quite the puddle for that filter to be submerged, and to suck in enough water.

I am happy with the intake and how it sits in the fender well....I just need to switch to a smaller filter so it will not pop the lining out. Also I could not find where the small vacuum line should go. Sarin said that his ran to the charcole canister....so I unpluged that one from the bottom of all that mess behind the TB and plugged it into the mid pipe. Thats how I have it hooked up now but I dont think that is right....so basically I feel as if my intake has an unessary fitting....but I can just put a cap over it. Any suggestions?
-I also think there may be some misunderstanding on the bypass valve. It hurts your performance all the time....but it will protect your motor from H20. So you will get the noise minus the performance if you use a bypass. (this is from what I have read, I have never owned one)

Hey I could be wrong
But im pretty sure that the bypass is on when there is a sudden drop of pressure. Then the air is sucked in through the bypass.

Actually, if you aren't happy with the height of the filter, it's an easy process of just cutting maybe 2-4" off the end of the pipe. That would put the filter higher.
Well, I don't think that the system is 100% sealed either way. There will be probably some degree of where that bypass is going to suck in hot air somewhere. Either way, it's your car. If you wish to use it, by all means do so. Also what Jeff says is right also. I mean, you can have the filter hanging out near the cornering lamp is you wanted!

yeah I know, I just dont know if that would help. with the wiring harness and the fender lining I think the pipe is about the right length, Im thinking I just need on that has a smaller base. So, I am going to pull the one off the Chevy Lumina that we have and try that one....it is a little longer but it is more narrow....I'll let you know what I find....I am hoping to have time to do this on Sat.
