Air Flow Meter unplugged

my '87 maxima will not idle. in order for it to drive somewhat i have to feather the gas and the car will move slowly then stall. it i unplug the air flow meter then the car runs fine. so, ihave two questions: does this sound like i need to replace the air flow meter? or computer? or? and second, what happens if i drive the vehicle with the meter unplugged?
thanks for any help you may provide.

yes, it sounds like your MAF is fried...running the car without it only forces the car to run default fuel maps, etc..., so it's likely to run rich, lack some power, etc...
