Spark Plug Trouble

I have an 88 and I recently took it in my hands to change my sparks. Well I bought the bosch plat 1's because I heard the 2 sucks. Well when I take original ones off they are plat.2s. Now Im a bit ocnfused because they run fine for months and months. Well onto the problem....I put the new ones it and my car jes sounded horrible, i think one piston stated clanking, idle was horrible..so then I just got irritated and installed the old ones..(cracking the sheeting on one of them (irritating as shyt). Well its still the same except no clanking now. Im very confused Ive never had this type of problem and Im gettin pissed. I need help urgently as this is my only way of trans for the moment.

GET RID OF THOSE BOSCH PLATINUM PLUGS!!!!!! Those things are garbage. I wouldn't put a bosch plug in my lawnmower, to be honest. I put a set of platinum 2s in my 88 max and it had a misfire that you wouldn't believe. and most people here will agree that they're junk. get yourself a good set of NGK v-power or NGK g-power platinum. fisher auto parts and napa both carry them. I've actually been able to get them at a nissan dealer for fairly cheap. if they're not available, denso plugs are the next best thing. but stay away from bosch spark plugs! bosch plug wires are really good, and so are their O2 sensors. but from my personal experience, their plugs are trash.

as for the rapping, maybe you accidentally dropped something into the cylinder? change out the plugs and we'll go from there.

I put the originals back in, and bought a new b2. Well it solved alot but it still feels a bit off. I have good amouint of smoke come from exhaust and the accel feels off by a touch. If i didnt have th b2s in my car then i would think it to be that. But my car has been running on them since i bought it and that was 10 months ago. And its been running fine. I just want to know why its smoking and a bit off on firing.

Get the NGK plugs. They work wonders for the max, besides there the OEM plugs. And get the cooper ones platinum dosen't work for an older motor that has its share of deposits.

could it be my timing? Ive read up on it and came up with my symptoms could be my timing (smoke and rough idle) Also i live in michigan pretty cold out and I had liquid in my exhaust. I checked my oil its not milky so i do not think coolant is leaking and the smoke doenst smell sweet it smells really strong fumes of gas (white)

Change the plugs first.

You could also check your gas lines. They can get old and crack, especially in the cold. That will def. cause the smell. Also a bad fuel press. reg. will cause vapors too, I THINK (not 100% sure)

Well i changed the plugs with autolites copper cores and I found out my problem. the piston closest to the dis. cap isnt firing right or at all. (i think its piston #2) Ive checked the connection to the cap and it sparks fine, i checked the current through the wire by touching it against metal and watching for the spark and it worked. Now the only thing is my fuel injector. Maybe this will help out alot for someone to help me out because I dont know if i can last a month till i get my new car lol.

Also, the spark plug that isnt lighting seems to be kinda drenched in oil when i took it out. I know that isnt good but what is causing it?

Whoa....I didn't see this...

Okay a few things:

How bad is the car smoking, and what color is the smoke? The plug that isn't firing, was it coated with oil on the older plug? When the car started smoking, was that after the clanking when away?

This is what happened in sequence:

My car was working fine except for the tinest rough idle not even that noticble. (had the bosch p2s in them)

Took out the three front and swapped with the bosch p1.

I cranked the engine, and it started ti clank and idle rough.

(i didnt pay attention to the old spark to see if it had oil)

So i replaced the old ones and it still persisted.

So i revved up the engine and it started to smoke really bad, not so thick of white almost clear but still visible.

Its smoking somewhat from the valve covers because 1 screw is missing right under the dis.cap.

Then I was told to change the plugs to copper cores and so i did..all 6 of them.

Problem is still the same just not as rough a idle as the old ones. No clanking jes that one piston #2 that isnt firing and tht is the plug i foun with oil in it.

No it did not smoke before, and all i did was change the plug..i found it to be so wierd that just changing the plug made this big of deal.

Does this smoke smell like burnt oil? When the last time you replaced the cap and rotor? How about the wires? All I can say is you got problems.....and if it was clanking before it was smoking....you got a very bad problem.

Sounds like the oil seal ring in that piston is gone. Your smoke will be sort of blueish, unless its also leaking coolant, then the color changes. That clanking sound might be the tip of the other spark plug that was that cylinder. You need to do a compression test to verify that the cylinder is bad. sorry man sounds like your max is on its last leg.

But what is kinda confusing me is just changin a plug did all this. I have never touched the cap jes plug the wires when i was testing for the bad cyl. It doesnt really smelll like oil jes smells like exhaust fumes with smoke (i have no cat). But it has never smoked like this before. But w/e if i have to wait a month for my new car i guess it had to happen sooner or later.

yeah, I'll start working on the gravestone now. unless you wanna put a new engine in her. I have a feeling deep down inside that my long lost maxima now rests in sentra heaven.

it's always sad to see loved ones go.
