My 87 Maxima seems to have a short somewhere which tells the computer that the right door is open every time I take a quick left turn or hit a bump. I've tried fixing the problem with no luck. Basically, I want to turn off that annoying lady talking in the car and the switch in the center console doesn't work. How can I do this? I tried pulling some fuses but that didn't work either. HELP!!!

thanks,
Jeremy

for my 84 max, there is a black voice box under the driver side botom panel. open the pannel and see if u can see a small black plastic square box close to the left. disconnect the wire and the voice will be gone forever.

Just buy her a diamond ring- that might keep the talking chick off your back for a while.

Same problem here

My boss has the same problem in his '87. She talks all day about that damn door being ajar. Surely there is a problem in the door sensor bar that can be fixed so see can talk only when we want to hear her. I would hate to hear her never again. Sometimes in my '81, I will leave the lights on and open the door, just to hear her talk. In '81 the only command she speaks is "Please turn off the lights" The '82 girl has more to say. The '81 Max was the first talking prodution car in history. A little trivia to trip up your buddies.

I'll have to make a list as to what the lady says for my 84. The 81 is the headlights thing...

More on this this evening, I'm going to go and see what I can make her say, lol!!

Cheers!

As far as I can make the car talk this is what I got:

"<single tone bing> Parking Brake is on."

"<single tone bing> Left Door is open." (applies to both front and rear)

"<single tone bing> Right Door is open." (applies to both front and rear)

"<single tone bing> Lights are on." (headlights/parking lights)

That was all I could get out of her. The voice is WAY different than the '81 as well, more english sounding (without the Japanese type accent)and more beautiful sounding actually, I think I'm falling in love, LOL!!!

Cheers!

Hey BB525,

I pulled the driver's side kick panel off and found the black box you were referring to. I pulled the two wiring harnesses out of the box and now the irritating chatterbox lady is gone forever, he he. I wish I would have done this sooner. Thanks a lot for your help!

If you have found a way to keep a female quiet while you are driving, I would sure like to know it. I don't have an automatic "talking chick" in my '88 but my wife and two girls more than make up for it. I wonder if I can disconnect their talk boxes.

@*%#@^!$...I thought the problem was fixed but it started happening again today. I guess I must have unplugged the wrong "black box." I basically give up trying to solve this problem. Isn't the "voice" on/off switch in the center console supposed to turn off the lady? The switch doesn't seem to work.

Check the door

I still think you should try to address it at the door, which is where your problem is. There is a springy rubber part in the door jam that is probably worn out. Tape or glue it in the off position, or replace it with a new part. This shouldn't take but 5 minutes. That way you don't lose her voice when you need it, like when you forget to turn off your lights and leave the car's battery to die.

Have you tried this?

Re: Check the door

Yes, I tried to put a small spacer plate between the passender side door sensor to ensure that it was being activated when the door was closed but this didn't work. I like your suggestion. I have another 87 maxima that I can swap the door switch with. I'll try this tonight and let you know what happens.

thanks,
Jeremy

Cool, the little button in the center console did the trick! I just push the button after I start the car and the voice only says "right door open" once instead of repeating over and over.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Voice Box Location

I read in a manual that the voice module is located under the center console, just in front of where the armrest/storage would be.
I haven't checked this out yet...my voice comes and goes...
so I will be looking into it.
It makes sense to me. This would put the switch location directly above it.

Geez, I didn't realize this thread was going to be so popular when I originally posted it. Enough already - the problem is fixed!

We just love her!

We can't help but talk about her. I plan to take her with me and install her in every car I own in the future, if my Max ever dies. she has such a beautiful voice (At least in 1981 models). I miss this goofy technology in newer cars. She is the best woman possible = talks only when necessary! I would love to see the body on her! I bet she could give a good.......................

What talking chick?

I wonder if I'm the only one asking the question: what talking chick? I looked over the Haynes manual and I didn't see anything about it. This is the first post I've seen about it.

Is it really that helpful? I like mid to late 80's cars because they had tons of neat little stuff, even though a lot of it was useless. One thing I wish was on the MAX is the HUD, heads up display, where the speed was projected onto the windshield.

Let's say I wanted to get this talking chick for my 87 GXE. Possible, or not?

I sure would like to hear an MP3 or wav or something. Any volunteers?
