Hello everyone. I'm new here. I inherited an '86 Maxima GLE wagon from my father when I got my licence two weeks ago. I just found out about the substantial power of the engine despite its age. Anyway, I haven't done anything to the car and was wondering what kind of aftermarket there is for this car. Also, I was wondering...

That thing on the right, above the battery, is the air box cover right? So... if I remove it, will it do anything? I.e. louder, very very slight power gain, etc. Any help is appreciated, as I don't know much about this car. Thanks!

yup thats the airbox cover. No need to remove it unless you want dust/dirt to build up and slow down the airflow.

Sorry southgoetz, I disagree. I had a K&N filter with the airbox top removed and there was a significant increase in sound a little more power. This method works well if you dont want to do a cone-filter or CAI. If you are doing to do this, use silicon to seal the filter (K&N suggested) into the airbox so dust doesn't sneak past your filter. BTW this method was suggested to me by Nismo87se and we all know how reliable he is.

Oh I agree with you there...but I was assuming he wasn't going to change the filter & clean up under the hood...did you see all that filth? I was just recommending not to do it under those conditions. To dLo: I'd consider cleaning up the engine compartment before doing anything to the air filter (if that was your car in the pic).

dLo aZn, southgoetz is right about cleaning your engine bay. If that picture is of your engine bay you really need to scrub it down. That could definitly pose a problem when using an open-element air intake.
thanks for your help everyone. I was about to clean the engine bay; i just inherited the car from my dad, who's used it as a commuter for 250,000 miles
