New Exhaust (on 1st Gen)... audio recording!

Check it out... I dont have any pictures yet of the complete system, but here is the tail end of it:

It is 3" mandrel bent stainless steel tubing with a high flow Magnaflow cat and 14" SS Magnaflow muffler. When I get it up on a lift I'll take some full pictures. I was very careful to make sure the exhaust did not hang below the bottom of the car at any point. The muffler and turn down are both hidden up under the car so as not to draw any visual attention. It ended up being louder than I wanted, so I may try a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler, but until then, I'm enjoying it :-).

the drive by one sounded alot better, more exhaust less engine noise.

sounds good though.. Makes me feel better about the sound of mine (2nd gen) when I get it done.

This is by far probably the best sounding maxima I've heard. Ranks right up there with a 5.5 gens with headers/exhaust.

Thanks guys. I posted this stuff because I had nothing to base my decisions off of when I was deciding on size and muffler for the car. Hopefully this can act as a reference to someone. When I try the Dynomax muffler, I will record the exhaust again and post it here for a comparison... and maybe even get a recording of the exhaust with no muffler.

Five years later......sounds great.....can even hear the turbo! Nice install, my Shelby Charger will have twin turn downs to hide it the exhaust tips and give it some stealth from those looking for street racing profiles....

I just acquired this car for my GF and let me say, this exhaust is very possibly the best stainless steel exhaust I have seen in any street car!
Chris is a top notch exhaust fabricator/welder!

I think Brian Catts makes some of the best Exhaust components I've ever worked with....Functional art!

Cattman Headers (I ceramic coated)

Catbacks Oem vs 2.5" vs 3" (Cattman)

Rear Mufflers 2.5" vs 3" (Cattman)

Rear view of 3"(Cattman)

Audio Rev of 3" Cattman 03 Maxima

honestly i dont know why ppl put a 3in exhaust on a N/A 6 cylinder engine for it has no purpose and get no more gain then a 2.5in, a turbo benefits more from a 3in.. it like when i see N/A hondas with a 3in pip im like wtf loud *** ****, all they did thier is get rid of the lil tq they have at the low end and made their **** louder. a 2-1/4 would be good.... but that my opinion .....

Actually the low torque is still there...tracteability isn't as crisp under 2500 rpm, but 2500 rpm on up is crazy....some one dyno'd a 20-25 whp/25 wtq gain over a 2.5" Cattman catback on a n/a VQ35.......Honestly you oughta visit the 5th Gen thread 3" Cattman Catback Order Here thread.......and check out some of the info.....My 3" isn't to bad noise wise on the street and it dropped my 1/4 ET(14.6 down to 14.5) with a nonagressive launh.....

I don't think I can go with the 3" cattman. My 4th gen S/C'er had 3in exhaust and I was loosing my mind with how loud it was.

So far I'm happy with my Megan Racing OE-RS (the deal was tough to pass up...but I wish I got a 2.5" cattman).

well i know about the low end tq, but we ar running high tq engines stock and 6 cylinders but just saying for the 4 bangers and low tq engines that do loose tq at the low end with a 3in exhaust... i see ppl swapping out cat backs but still retain the restrictive cat (2 something incher) why not swap it out for a free flowing cat?

RV cats are cheap solution if need a free flowing larger than stock cat.

Very true! I notice my Cattman 2.5" catback that I installed on a buddy's 02 Max which has OBX headers but with the stock cat seems a bit quieter and to me not as responsive throttle wise....My 03 has headers and a High Flow Metallic substrate Cat, and the 3" catback and it really rev's alot quicker, easier and pulls more violently when stepped into.....
