i'm pretty sure our transmission works differently than any thing newer alot of the people who have new maximas seem to think they all work in a similar way....often they dont...

dont quote me on this but this is what i am lead to belive

from what i was told the transmission in our cars (the auto ones) are a hydraulic shifting and not electronically controlled like newer ones....it really wouldnt matter if you speedo and tach didnt work theyre arent "talkin" to the transmission....most older caus wouldnt be this fancy, odds are your other gears are gonners...i would think if you got some cash and you paid $200 for the car then mabe its worth your time to get a transmission out of a junk yard....that is if you can replace the thing by your self

Can the 2nd gen tranny be rebuilt? I used to know a guy that rebuilt domestics for around $150. How much do you think a rebuild would be for these?

Have you tried the simple stuff like checking the tranny fluid level? If fluid level is fine, chances are the valve body is toast. Tranny is rebuildable, but most shops will charge $1500-2500.

I believe we do have a transmission ECU, but it works differently than the newer cars. I know overdrive is electronically controlled because of the button on the back of the shift ***. Unfortunately I dont know how much the ecu for the transmission actually does, or how much it contributes to the shifts if much.

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll tell my uncle what you guys told me, and hopefully we can figure this out. If the tranny ends up being shot, then I'll go ahead and get the tranny my uncles tranny guys has, rebuilt for $350. By the way, my tranny fluid is not low. Thanks again
