you'd have to take the tank right out to clean it out properly. even then it's pretty near impossible to get every little bit out of it. as long as it hasn't got a huge amount of sediment in the bottom of it, i wouldn't worry too much about it. just put the new pump in and make sure you don't run the car too low on gas, otherwise you'll end up sucking all the sediment off the bottom and running it through the new pump. make sure you replace the fuel filter when you put the new pump on too

Or you could tackle it. How? Im not sure. You may end up having to get it out. If you are serious about making sure you dont need a new pump in the future because of sucked up sediment I would suggest cleaning it out. I would suggest looking up what would be the best way to accomplish this. Because I know if I dont have money at that moment for gas I usually can let it go past the E for awhile sometimes. Im sure some people have done this as well.

if it gets near E in my car it starts to act funky (like on the line) i have a "ghetto" suggestion....

why not take the filler neck off put a bucket underneath it and jack the car up on the passenger side so it all runs out, and then go in there with a hose from above where you took the pump out and slosh a bit of water arround to get the sediment out....change the bucket before you slosh water arround, the gas may still be bad but it'd be good for a lawn mower or something, and then put the filler neck back on.

just a thought...just make sure the tanks dry before you put it all back together, a little water is ok but it doesent take much to throw it outa wack

I can go a good while past E on mine before it starts to stutter. Mine will only stutter once it gets to E when its in the summer and I have had the a/c running.

yeah, it is. you'd probably void the warranty on the new pump if you don't

I assume the fuel pump is in the tank? If so, then just run a length of tubing through the hole at the top of the tank and siphon the fuel and the sediment out. Once you have the fuel/sediment mixture in another container, let it sit for a couple days for the sediment to settle to the bottom, then you can rack/siphon the fuel off the sediment and either put it back in your Max or keep it for the lawnmower or whatever.

If you can see into the tank (or even if you can't) feed the tubing into the tank. Then with the other end of the tubing at a point as far below the bottom of the tank as possible, suck the gas through the tubing (with your mouth) until you see it coming your way and then quickly place your end of the tubing into a catch can/pan/tank/drum/bottle/jug. The more the elevation change between the beginning of the tube (gas tank end) to the other, the more suction you'll have and the greater the ability of the syphoning action to suck any sediment out. Good luck.

Don't tell me you've never syphoned all the gas out of a friend's car back in highschool. Simple pleasures. . .
