Confusing non-start issue

1987 Maxima GLE. First a little background on what happened. I was on the freeway going around 70mph when the engine just dies. No sputtering or anything, just instant 0RPM. Radio was still going and lights worked fine. Well I get it towed home and go to check the computer. The computer lights will not even light up. I have checked the codes many many times. When I try to start the engine, it cranks, but will not catch. Checked for spark, no spark. Fuel pump will not make the operating noise when ignition is on. I checked all fuses in the car, and in the engine area. I went to a picknpull and got another ECU, and tried it. Still nothing, no code lights or anything still. Before getting that ECU I checked for voltage at the ECU terminals that should get voltage and they do get the voltage. Pretty much right now I am at a total loss. I am going to exchange the used ECU for another just in case the one I got was spent. If it isn't the ECU I am asuming the wiring is messed up somewhere.

Anyone have any other ideas of what might be causing this? And if anyone has had a problem with the wiring and where it was flawed?

Thanks.

no spark, no fuel pump, possibly no ecm signal. will crank, but no start.

educated guess, I'd say check the wiring going from your ignition switch on. something isn't letting the juice through. based on the fuel pump not kicking on, ecm issues and no spark. did you check your relays?

Haven't checked the relays, guess I will try that. I did check in the ECU connector to see if it gets juice when the ignition is turned on, and it does. So it seems like the ECU is getting power.

check the crank angle sensor and grounds for the ecu and grounds for the wiring harness on the engine

Does anyone have the locations of all the grounds to check? Also is there a diagram for the ECU terminals that say what should be ground and what shouldn't? I have a Chilton's but it seems pretty sloppy in that regard. Not to mention it doesn't even display the 87 SMJ connections (Big Blocks), only the 89+ ones (normal looking harness connector).

Engine Grounds

These are the locations of the engine grounds for the E.F.I. Harness. Nissan calls them 14f,16f,19f, and 21f. 16,19,and 21 is located on the left front of the intake manifold near the distributor. There is also a vacuum line hooked up near it on the left of them grounds. 14f is located towards the left rear of the intake manifold near the idle-up solenoid.

You really need to work off of the Factory Service Manual as it has all the information you need. If I have some time I'll scan or take pics of some pages for you. You can leave your email address or PM me instead.
