Ideal ignition timing.
Ideal ignition timing.
I checked my timing today. I was about 3 degrees off, about 23btdc instead of 20. So I set it at 20, since that's what they call for with the automatic. It's 15 for the manual.
Not that I'm into messing with it anymore than I have to, but does anybody run different than what they call for? Why? More out of curiousity than anything else. I'm happy with the mileage I'm getting and mostly happy with the way it runs.

yea the bottom end of a VG will take 400hp, you said "high compression" and i haven't seen any place you have said that you put new pistons in bring it up from 8.5:1
Matty as far as the timing goes remember that a "factory tune" is set to be safe in all conditions, every thing from running 87 octane gas in 100+ deg. weather to running well in sub zero weather. As far as the differences between a auto and manual i think that a lot of it has to do with the amount of drag that the engine has when idling and fuel maps. I'm sure that there is way more to it then that but thats the best I can come up with at the moment.
