Custom Mesh Grille?

When I first got my Max ('87 GXE), I found instructions on how to make a custom wire mesh grille. I can't find the site now though. Does the site sound familiar to anyone?

I remember the instructions saying something about needing the grille from a SE because the GXE's chrome one looks bad behind the mesh. The mod looked nice to me and I was hoping someone would know what I am talking about.

Thanks,
Jorge

I don't remember seeing that post or web-site. However, it wouldn't be too difficult to make a mesh grill for your car. Just cut out the plastic inside the grill, get some gutter guard from a home improvement store, and then cut and fasten the guard to the inside of the grill. It probably would look better if you did get a black grill, however if your chrome grill is in good condition (unlike mine), you could paint the inside of the grill black and still leave the chrome around the outside.

That would look tight we did that to my boy's focus. It turned out pretty good I think we used gutter guard for home depot.

Would it look like this:

??
He says they are just "Mesh Grille Inserts". Does that mean custom, or can you purchase those?

I was just looking for the instructions because I remember they had some nice diagrams and such.

Thanks,
Jorge

That's an 85 Maxima, the grill on that car is flat, whereas the 87 and 88's are kind of slanted. It looks as though he just fastened the mesh to the outside frame of the grill. I'd recommend leaving the frame of the grill visible and putting the mesh inside of it. I'm pretty sure that he used gutter guard on his car too. You can paint it if you want, I don't think that it will rust, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

They do make mesh grills for some cars (mostly Hondas), however they don't make any custom mesh grills for our cars.

Yeah, that's pretty much the way you'd have to do it. I'm sure zip ties would work well to hold the mesh onto the plastic frame. The only difference between the 2nd gen grill and the 4th gen grill is the shape of it, other than that, a plastic grill is a plastic grill.

I could have sworn the instructions were written by you. Just couldn't remember the site. Thanks for posting the address.
