looking at an '84 wagon, got some Q's
guy's asking a price I almost can't refuse. says everything works, "the lady'll talk your ear off", and it runs.
primary problem I know of is the differential is going out. not a concern, as i know I can fix it, but I'm not sure where to get parts. also, he said it's got drum rears, and I would like disks.
I found that truck axles will fit, but I am having a problem finding out what models would/could work, or any cost effective, non-welded-dif upgrades.
planning on looking Saturday.
Since I have hardly spent any time in the 1-2 gen section, I am almost a total n00b on a 1g wagon.
TIA.

Sources for H-190 3.889 third members:
'80-'84 Maxima wagon with 3.364, 3.545 and 3.70 ratios.
'82-83 200sx auto 3.70 and manual 3.545
'80-'82.5 720 2wd manual 3.889
'82.5-'83 720 2wd auto 3.70 manual 3.545
'83.5-'86 720 diesel 3.889
'83-'86 720 2wd auto 3.889 and manual 3.70
In all cases the rear end ratio is stamped into the aluminum engine tag located on the passenger side cowl area on cars and on passenger side inner fender under hood hinge on the 720. I would not bother with the 720 4X4 as the ratios are 4.11 and above. The H-190 was used also in the D-21 Hardbody and up through the '90s but I'm not as familiar with those models.

Being both rears use the same side gears, the Maxima Wagon H190 center should swap directly into the 510 wagon rearend without changing side gears.
Also note, the 200SX H190 uses the 29 spline "truck" axles, seems strange the Maxima Wagon would have the smaller 23 spline axles.

That's what it looks like. however, iirc, the truck axles are 6-lug, and if I switch lug patterns, I want 5x4.5, like every other maxima. any idea on the axle shaft lengths?
looked at the car, today. runs and drives. needs some brake work, suspension work and the rear axle problem fixed. it's a quiet roar on deceleration. keep reading it could be the pinion bearing, or axle bearings. I have my suspicions that it may have been rebuilt wrong, or something, but obviously wouldn't know unless I tore it apart.
engine felt underpowered, but I think anything not built (or rebuilt) in the past 10 years feels that way. auto trans shifted fine, up to about 45 (3rd?), no long wait between neutral and drive.
shocks are GONE, it's riding on springs alone.
offering $400, and asked to think about it. I figure it'll take about $300 for tags and maintenance stuff. not sure about what the rear axle will cost.
still debating on getting it.

Oh, yeah, the tags are out, but not a big deal.

i agree, for that much i would get it. 84 wagons were the best ones to get too. They do feel slow, especially in first gear just because of how they are geared. It should perform about similar to 2010 kia soul sport tho, at least mine edges ahead by a mm.
FFFFFFUuuuuuu, now that you had this ive had a offer. a guy on a local forum offered me his 1st gen auto for $100, needs a headgasket and waterpump. told him to not scrap it or anything and i can consider it in a bit
my hands are tied, i already may have to swap my 3rd gens engine and im going back to school in August. i cant store it at the house here and the only other place i can store it is at a underground parkade at a apartment, and even then i would have to bribe for a parking spot and they give you only 24-72 hours notice before they clean the parkade and you need your vehicle out ASAP or it gets towed. i would need it stored for a year or more
just a crappy situation alltogether, 3rd gen gets priority. i just hope someone else takes his 1st gen
