Help with Power Steering rebuild...

Here's my 88' Maxima PS pump removed. Anyone have procedure or instructions rebuilding these? The metal ring goes over the pulley shaft. In another photo apparent grinding can be seen on it and there are bearings exposed with some pieces of metal mixed in. Looks like something ground up pretty nicely.

I don't see any cracks in the housing though, so I hope it can be rebuilt.

Looks like the bearing is no good. Looks like the snap ring over the bearing can be removed and the bearing replaced if you can find one. Im not sure about a rebuild though? Have you tried checking ebay for a replacent?

Kits are straight forward and easy....There are millions of good cheap units in the junk Yard ready to be crushed!

Help needed... which direction do these go back in?

Ok I've got a ps pump from an 85' and I've installed it, re-connected the return line, but I've got the line that comes off with the #24 bolt, and a spring and a pistion like rod came out, and I don't remember which end of that silver piston goes in first, and if the spring goes in before or after it.

The spring goes in the bore first, and the valve can only go in one way smaller end first and ring lands last! If you installed the big end first then you won't be able to screw the connector with the pressure valve built in next!

Yes, I discovered that. As well as that a SE and a GXE use slightly different PS pumps, and the brackets for the banjo hoses are oriented to take that hose slightly but critically differently, and I could not get the angle correct to start the screw, so I ended getting an exact fit from the junkyard. I'm going to go ahead and use it as is for now and if I have problems, then I'll disassemble and rebuild then. I still haven't found anything with good photos on the rebuild yet, and I still a little gun shy. I need a clamp for the hp hose, and then reinstall the belts, and I'll be ready for a test drive!

There's a disassembly photos or diagrams in the FSM and the rebuild kit...I used both the 2000-01 FSM since they're all relatively the same....If you need anything I can scan what I have and email it to you...

I didn't. I kept the bracket that was on the pump, but apparently it's angled differently than what the line wants for the bolt fitment into the pump. When I got a 88 pump installed, it fit like a charm. I've only got to get the belts tightened up and fill with ATF and test drive. Thanks!

Great! Cycle the steering back n forth should clear all the air bubble in about 3 minutes or less.

Yeah will do. Hey while I not in front of the car, doesent the belt go back on like this: over the p/s pump, over the tensioner, under the crankshaft, over the water pump, and back to the p/s pump. The main belt goes back over the crankshaft and under a tensioner, and over the AC compressor. A third belt runs from the AC compressor to the altenator. I can't find a diagram of this anywhere online, and it's not on the underside of the hood. I think I've got this right, but thought I'd ask since you're online.

IF your tensioner is smooth then the goes over but if the tensioner is ribbed then the belt goes under it....I think your tensioner is ribbed!

ribbed tensioner

The fat belt has a ribbed tensioner between the crankshaft and ac comp. It's the one that adjusts from above near the thermostat. The ac compressor is also ribbed, and only if I go over both, will the.belt meet the ribs of the tensioner. The adjustment screw has come out. Does it need to screw into the tensioner to make it go up/down? I guess I need to go up to tighten...

Well no mechanic here, but I managed. The belt goes over both the tensioner and the AC comp. Test drive went just fine. Thanks again...

I kited mine and made a mistake the first time. Make sure you put the center O ring on the plug. Don't just lay it in the grove and set the plug in. Put it where it needs to be. The bearing doesn't come with most kits but is available on ebay.
