Need a compressor for a 1994 (4 rib)

My mechanic says my air conditioner compressor is dead. Can anyone suggest where I can get one.

GXE or SE? not sure if they're the same compressor or not.

used: try www.car-part.com

new? rockauto.com for afterkmarket parts. dealership might still sell them new, but you're going to pay insane price for it.

Be sure to buy a new dryer and all that as well. your mechanic will know all those details.

gxe

Thanks for the info. Its a GXE. I think I'll go this route. $350 dollars is cheaper than the $650 that they want. I like the idea that you get a warranty also..

$350? Get one from the junkyard if yours really is bad. If you think about it, how often does the compressor work? Not too much, I wouldn't be surprised if yours is perfectly fine and your mechanic pulling a fast one or doesn't know what he's talking about.

Not a bad idea..

Not a bad idea (the junk yard). It's the original compressor. The car has 215,000 on it. After 18 years I'd say that's pretty good life for the original. I've known my mechanic for over 35 years so I really trust him and what he does.
You guys may have noticed on my other posts, I've put 4k into this car now since March of this year as my job is 300 miles away from my home. I've debated about whether or not to sale her but nobody would give my 5 cents for her. To trade it in on anything would be giving it away. Whats a guy to do...

Wow, you have a 600 mile round trip commute to/from work? I hope you don't have to do that every day.

$500 here $500 there...

I make the trip back home every week so I'm not making the 300 mile journey every day! Just doing this on a weekly bases has really driven up the miles. I would consider just not getting the air conditioner fixed but when it gets up into the 90's, even with the window down, it just gets to hot inside the car. This engine/trans could go for another 100k or more and I just can't justify putting up with this heat every year so I'll probably have to break down and get it fixed...Oh well whats another $500..or so..shes been good and deserves it..

I've got at least one. Worked when pulled. Kept ports clean and covered. I'd have to look at shipping, not sure if it will fit in a large flat rate box or not. If it will, $50 shipped in US?
Let me know. I can have it out Wednesday.
