For a while my antenna would not retract all the way. I had noticed not all the segments were perfectly straight, so I tried to straighten them some before, while the antenna was still on the car. (limited success)

Today I pulled it out, expecting some of the segments to excessively drag, which they did. Straightened the bent segment, and drenched the mast with silicone lube, which helped clean out the old grease which was drying out. Got the mast moving smoothly in my hand.

When I try to refeed the "rope", and once it catches, it sounds like it binds. I have the gear facing backward, but now it is working even worse than before. It appears that I have replaced a mast bind with a rope jam.

Questions / pleads for advise:

1. Can the rope misfeed? is there a right / wrong way to feed this thing back in?

2. Should I take the motor out (difficult I know) and see if its innards are still ok, and maybe succeed in properly feeding the rope and mast back in the long way.

3. If I need to remove the antenna motor, where are the mounting screws, and how many are there?

4. When the antenna is loose, do the electric wires, the signal coax, and drain hose unplug, or are they attached? If attached, where do you cut to mount a new one
(if my project ends up that far)

Thanks in advance to those who have done this, and decide to post any pointers

Best regards,
John

IT IS EASY TO FEED IN. I JUST START FEEDING IT IN AND ONCE I CAN TELL IT HAS HIT THE GEAR I SLOWLY ROTATE IT UNTIL IT CATCHES. VERY, VERY EASY TO CATCH UNLESS A SECTION OF THE OLD NYLON ROPE OR SOMETHING ELSE IS MUCKED UP.

2. Should I take the motor out (difficult I know) and see if its innards are still ok, and maybe succeed in properly feeding the rope and mast back in the long way.
IT IS NOT THAT HARD. I WOULD DO THAT JUST TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS WORKING OK.

3. If I need to remove the antenna motor, where are the mounting screws, and how many are there?
SEE INFO IN THE POST AT THE LINK AT THE BOTTOM.

ALL EASY - JUST PULL OFF.

Thanks in advance to those who have done this, and decide to post any pointers

My advice, go to Crutchfield, pay the $60.00 and buy a new one. Power antennas a a pain in the a$$ to work on.

I agree the power antenna is a bit of a pain since it does require maintenance and repair - especially in my cold climate. However, I really don't think it's at all hard to work on.

Try it yourself and decide.

Got it fixed!

Thank you Nissan for providing a unit that fully disassembles! Took out the motor. Was no big deal indeed -- thank you to those who posted advise.

I fully disassembled the unit, cleaned out all the old grease (gears looked like new after that), put phono lube on the gears, and lithium on the whip. The existing mast has been straightened, so it binds ever so little, but it moves, quietly, and perfectly, up and down. At the next sign of trouble, I'll put in a new mast.

Worthwhile project. Cost: $0.00, and about three hours. Next time it will be about one hour (learning curve for first time)

Best regards,

John
