1) I am pretty sure that oil pressure controls the VTC solenoids to advance the intake cam, are there any electronic ECU controls to this system at all?

2) What controls the 2-stage intake manifold to open up at 3500 rpm? I would guess an electronic control. If so, does nayody know how to vary it to say, open at 3000 rpm?

3) Any other possibilities? Anybody ever get their ECU reprogammed successfully?

Where can I get more info on this? Price, performance, etc. Thanks

i watch alot of car shows on tv, and one of the things they had on one show was a little comuter that will reprogram your ecu. it was really simple for them to do, they just plugged it in and programmed it how they wanted to. does anybody know where you can buy something like this? it would be worth it to just buy one of these instead of paying jwt $500 or so, to reprogram it and go through the hassle of sending them the ecu and having them have to send it back.

You would be correct sir. There are about 4-5 conditions that control the VTC activation or de-activation actually. rpm, temp, load, and a few others..

On 5-sps, there is a flap inside the intake. That flap is controlled by a vacuum actuated cylinder. IN the pic, it's located on the left side right inbetween the FSTB and air emissions tube. Just above the left side VTC solenoid wire. If your auto, you don't have this.

I've asked JWT and UPRD but they have never replied. We're small beans I guess.

Got the 5spd, so I got the flap. I was reading about it in my factory service manual but I didnt know it was exclusive to 5spds.

Cattman Performance lists an ECU upgrade for the 3rd gen Max's. Most likely for the VG motor though. Might want to give them an email for details. http://www.cattman.com

Don't gimmie no "flap" okay?? LOL. Hey rebuilding the engine in the apartment story was freakin' funny man. Glad it worked!

But FYI here. The is only one ecu gen avail for the VE. JWT does it. Stillen and Cattman are distributors for it. I think Dinan also sells one but I don't know how complete the reprogramming is. Also I suspect that even the JWT ecu does not alter the VTC activation points. With my mods, I would like it to start advancing about 400-500 rpms earlier.
