engine codes

Today I was trying to figure out what do all the codes mean on an engine code?
For example RB26DETT. I know the TT = Twin Turbo, and the 26 means 2.6 liters. What does the DE mean? And how does Nissan decide on the prefix like VG, VE, VQ, or RB?

The prefix or 1st 2 letters are the engine family. the next 2 represent engine size and the 3rd 2nd set are if its SOHC or DOHC. For example a SOHC VG 3.0L engine would be a VG30E, a DOHC would be a VG30DE. The E stands for electronic fuel injection.

thanks, I was pretty sure that the DE in VE30DE meant that it was DOHC but I just didn't know what the letters stood for.
