Burning a lot of gas

Just bought a 1990 Maxima and found out what you guys are talking about when you say it's a great car. Although I never got the owners manual, so I'm not sure how most things work I'm familiar with the ECT transmissions where you the Sport/Power and Comfort well I have the option of leaving it on either one or simply in the middle. The question I have is leaving it in the middle OK or must I choose Sport/Power or Comfort.

Also my fuel consumption is outrageous can someone tell me is this normal? I get a little over 200 miles with a full tank. I not use to this type of fuel consumption, because I used to have a 4 cylinder Toyota Celica GTS and I got like 300-350 on a full tank. Also I'm not a hard driver, so this shouldn't attributed to my fuel comsumption. If anyone can help me solve this problem it would be greatly appreciated. Also the car was just recently tuned up before I bought it.

Actually, if you keep the switch in the middle and floor the gas suddenly, I think the tranny will automatically go to Power mode and the Power light will be on for a short time, then turn back off when things go back to normal. Could be wrong on this, though, it's been awhile since I owned my 90 SE auto.

200 miles per tank does seem excessive. I got 320 miles per (full) tank on my 92 SE 5-speed last time I checked, which admittedly has different engine. That translated to about 20 mpg. I don't remember anymore what kind of mpg my old 90 SE gets.

How many gallons do you typically need to top up the gas tank after 200 miles? Divide the 200 miles by it, and you'll get your MPG.

Suppose you need to put 15 gallons to your tank after 200 miles, that'll be 13.3 mpg! That's like a Ford Expedition or something! If it's more like 14 gallons, that's 14.3 mpg, still pretty bad! What's the MPG rating on the sticker for a VG auto Maxima? I think it's 18 city, 24 highway or something. Of course lead-footed guys like us probably going to get lower mpg, but still... !
