top mounting 6X9's

You can do anything with time money and patience. I think this will be kind of an interesting job, and it would definitely be somewhat original in a third gen. Although, some things you may want to consider are functionability and quality. It also depends on what the rest of the stereo setup is, what kind of sound you are looking for and what kind of speakers you will be using in there.
The opening is set for a 6 3/4" speaker. 6.5" kinda fit but dont really. The Bose speakers are bottom mount because they were meant to provide mid and low range sound. Clarity and high range are not really heard from the rear speakers, but mainly from the front speakers. The rear Bose mounting brackets "funnels" the sound from the 6x9 opening through the 6.75" opening. This space acts as an enclosure.
Going back to the top mount 6x9's, I don't think that you will gain very much in low response, but you will gain highs. Its is good to have this kind of imaging in the rear because it fills the cabin with full range sound rather than just having all vocals coming from the front of the car near the floor.
With this in mind, I think that all that is neccessary in the rear deck are a good set of 6.75" speakers. Sure you lose some bass response, but you could always add a sub which you could tweak to your likings. Im just worried about cutting into the rear deck and then having the trouble of measuring the opening to the new speakers. Also, if your 6x9s have long-throw woofers, you'll want to cut the hole larger on the rear deck cover so that the cone won't hit it. Maybe you could raise it a little.
Thats my $.02, so if you do the job, dont forget to post pics, I'd like to see how it comes out and hear your testimony on the sound. Good luck bro.

Is there any special reason you want to do top mounting? I mean besides the circular hole vs the oval speaker. It will be original, but not worth the trouble IMHO.

the only reason i want to topmount is beacuase they are bottom mounted right now and it sound like some thing is hiting the brakets and i cant get my infinitys to be tight(screwed down) enough i tryed modding the brakets(bose brakets) so that there was more room inside of it. I think top mounting will let me crank down how tight they are be cause right now they are fighting agians gravity and the volume they are fireing in to is small.

i converted my rear deck to top mount...it just takes a little time and patience...i bought some mdf and made a whole new template to put over the metal deck and recarpeted the whole thing...i had to do it the time consuming way cause i didnt have a jigsaw, but if u do it'll b soooo easy...i had to remove some of the metal in the deck 2, but that was no biggie...i filled in the gaps b/t the mdf and the deck w/ the good ol' wal-mart mattress eggshell stuff

kits not that hard, just buy some metal shears and go to town, cut out the right size for the speaker and shoot some screws to hold em down, evil yak did it on his car, cut himself up though from the loose metal , that stuff is sharp!
