make sure the little intake switch is in the down position, otherwise you'll draw air from infront of the windshield... which is VERY cold. the dealer i bought my 93 from couldn't figure out what was wrong with it after i tested it and complained that the heater sucked. the switch was just stuck in the middle. just reminds me to go to the Chilton's manual before i go to the dealer next time.

thermostat ok?

Make sure your engine's getting warm in the first place. Last winter, the thermostat on my dad's car broke so that it was stuck open and the engine never warmed up. Cold engine = no heat. If that's not the problem, then start thinking about things like the heater core.

I have the same problem. The temp gauge on my 90SE is right in the middle and I have the button in the down position also. The other day I let the car idle for about 6 minutes still the car was barely warm. For now I have half the radiator cover with a cardboard just to get some heat. It is quite cold out these days. I would appreciate if someone could tell us what is the problem.

Thanks in advance

I believe there is a vaccume controlled valve that lets water into the heater core...that could be the culprit. Maybe its not getting enough vac or its defective. If heater core was bad, you'd be gettin water in your floorboards probably.

I posted this a while back, but here it is again.....

1) Make sure the coolant system is full. Air pockets will detract from heater performance.

2) Make sure the thermostat is working. Does the temperature gauge show a normal reading? Does the upper radiator hose get really hot? A stuck-open thermostat may prevent the engine from reaching normal operating
temperature. This will detract from heater performance.

3) Check the air mix door and its control mechanism. The mix door blends cool outdoor air with heated air. If the mix door is in the 100% outdoor air position you will get no heat, even though the heater core may be hot.

4) Your Maxima may be equipped with a Water Control Valve. This valve controls the flow of engine coolant through the heater core. Its purpose is to keep the heater core cool while the A/C is running. It may be
operated by a steel wire control cable or by engine vacuum gated by a solenoid valve. If the Water Control Valve is closed you will not get any heat even though the engine is hot. See the Haynes '93-'99 Maxima manual, photo 11.7 on page 3-10 or the Chilton '93-'98 Maxima manual, Figure 18,
page 6-9. You may purchase these manuals at any large bookstore or auto parts store. You may find them on the shelf at your public library.

Hope this helps, guy/gal.

Mine used to be like waht you guys are talking about. I replaced thermostat and all is well. No new core, no nothing, just a thermostat. Easy fix.
