Need Engine & Opinions
Need Engine & Opinions
Just purchased a 93 SE auto, with a bad engine.
I have found a couple of motors in wrecking yards, but I kinda like the idea of getting a JDM motor with less miles.
The more I search for a JDM motor, the more leary I get.
I'm getting quotes anywhere from $800 to $2000 and some claiming they are the best while bad-mouthing other sources, saying the other guys are getting engines from Korea or where ever with more miles and selling them as low milege JDM engines.
Opinions?
Should I buy a motor from here, or get JDM?
If I go JDM, who is trustworthy?
Since this engine had a problem with the variable timing setup, will the JDM engine not have it? Or am I better off getting a 94 VE30DE?
Sorry bout all the questions. SJ

Re: Need Engine & Opinions
BTW this is a great chance to do some work to the motor before it is installed. After you get the new motor, or pull the old one. Remove the heads and have them ported/polished by an engine shop. Then take the camshafts and send them to http://www.iskycams.com/ and tell them you want the 262 duration EURO cam grind. Of course your going to have to call and provide some info on the VE cams but it would be worth it. Also install new or rebuild the VTC soleniods once the heads come back.

You should take advantage of doing some work when you have the engine out efore dropping it in like Nisma87se said. About where to get engine is tough since trying to get a good deal is the goal of your purchase but then again you get what you pay for, unless some places are just overpriced. See what kind of warranty they offer with the engines they sell, the more they offer the more certain they are about their product. I don't think there has been a lot of discussions about buying a new engine but you can start by using the SEARCH FUNCTION!!!!!!! Good Luck
First of all, the VE30DE is not U.S. only. In fact, when the VE30DE came out in 1992, Nissan actually stopped installing the VG30E in the JDM J30 Maxima and made the VE30DE standard equipment on the Maxima. On the Type-A, Type-C and SE.
Type-A is an equivalent of our GXE, Type-C is like a GLE before there was a GLE, and the SE is about the same (slightly different grille).
Aside from the obvious RHD, some details differences on the JDM include 1) smaller tires - 205/60R15 89H 2) amber bumper lenses on the Type-C, woodtrim on the Type-C. Nissan didn't put rear drum brakes on any JDM Maximas.
Only problem is that these cars sold very slow in Japan. In the three times I've been there in the last three years, I didn't even see ONE J30 Maxima there
(Camrys are rare there too).
Secondly, there are no Japanese cars in South Korea. South Korea is a closed market. All you will see there are Hyundais, Kias, Daewoos, etc..
If you want a good JDM motor, ask around, look on the web and see what places have warranties.
Here's one I found. http://www.nippon-motors.com/

A few places....
Schnieder Cams also does good work, just another option. I suggest you avoid Midwest Engines while looking for a JDM. A quick note on them, I filed a complaint about my VG30ET they sent, the VP responded by stating that the problems I had were reported after the "4 month" warranty had elapsed. Funny thing was that even the date HE GAVE in the his response for when I first contacted them was still well within the warranty period. He also said he sent replacement parts he did not and that the engine will not fit in a Max anyway. Sorry, it's been about a year now and I'm still piffed about it!

I'm guessing since they are so rare, it's probably not worth the trouble to get a JDM VE.
I would think so also... but it may still be worth asking around to see if anybody importers have a JDM VE30DE engine is stock. After all, if somebody actually went to the trouble of buying a a J30 Maxima in Japan, he or she must have really wanted it for some reason, and if it was me, I'd take pretty darn good care of the car.
(Well, actually, I probably would have bought a Cefiro......)
The JDM engine specs out about the same (195 HP JIS which is close to 190 HP SAE-Net),so the advantage is just the low miles.
