yeah i remember you on aim. hows life treating ya??? and as i told you my Andretti exhaust is a local made exhaust. But no one has yet to answer my question i guess that no one knows. it has nothing to do with the radio. i just found the thing the other day when i was messing with my system. i used one of the 4 bolts that hold it down as a ground.

Well, where's the thing located within the trunk?

From the description seem to suggest it's the power antenna motor, they do hum when you get out of car (or rather shut your radio off.)

Hey, maybe it's a bomb! After all, check the description again (cylinder, wires coming out of it...) Do you see any clock-type device in it? Does it make ticking noise? You have any bitter enemies?

is it behind the back seat?i have an 89, mine didnt have any wires sticking out of it. its right above the fuel tank. i dunno what it is but i took it off and no changes, so scrap it. it may have something to do with leveling the fuel, or as an internal roll bar, who knows, all the bolts dropped down except for one. for some reason it just doesnt come out. and the thing weighs like 20 lbs.

Its your motor that makes the antenna go up when your radio is on, and go down when not in use. I wondered the same thing for a while until I finally noticed.

antenna

yeah, the power antenna motor is in the side, above and in front of the jack compartment.

Is it mounted on the rear tray, between the speakers or where exactly?

it is directly behind the back seat on the floor of the trunk. it is not the power ant. making the noise it is the stupid round chunk of rubber in my trunk. it is factory. so if one of you guys would just walk out to your cars and take a look at YOURS you do have one i would think. or maybe it is just a gxe thing i dont know. thanks jonathan

I dont think that's what he's talking about

on GXE's they have a round cylinder mounted horizontally at the base of the rear seat. If you open the trunk, you can see a small hump at the bottom of the trim that covers the back of the rear seat inside the trunk.

All the SEs I've seen dont have this.

The things people have said before are it's for sound deading and to balance weight in the car.

Another theory is that it dampens resonance through the rear sheetmetal. Mine had one but I don't remember any wires coming out of it.

Jon if your rear is humming after shutting the door you may be the first person ever thats worn out your 'thing in the trunk'. Congratulations.

Could it be loose?

but if it's just weight why would it be in the gxe and not the se. If it is supposed to help out the weight ratio i would think their sports sedan would have one too. (unless it's because the auto weighs more)

i took a look at mine today. there are no wires in the actual piece. But i'm ****ing baffled as what that could be. It is this huge metal cylinder that is mounted on two mounts on either side that have a type of rubber thing in the middle. the mounts are exactly like the engine and tranny mounts but smaller. you can move that metal cylinder around and stuff. it's really weird. i was trying to look in my haynes book today to see if there was anything on it but i couldn't find anything and didn't even really know where to look.

almost sounds like an ecu. my friends acura integra's ecu is under the passenger seat. although on a maxima it's in the front behind the radio area. there are some nissans that have ecu's mounted under the passenger seat earlier trucks and pathfinders. you may just take your seat out to see what it really is. it's not that hard, you just need a socket wrench (i think 14 mm can't remember though) and take out the four bolts.

I believe this is what he is talking about:

As for what I've gathered it is a vibration dampener, and it also aides with the flex of the frame. Mine didn't have any wires attached to it, so I don't have any idea what the wires could be for. I recently took mine out when I built my custom box. It would have been cool if I could have built my box around it, but I think that would be pushing my already less than perfect carpentry skills, so I just decided it had to go. Once it's out you'll notice that it flexes very easily, but weighs a TON. I haven't noticed any difference with it gone. But I also Peal & Sealed my entire trunk, so that may have made up for the "Thing" not being there. I would imagine that if you took out both the "Thing" and the spare tire would would get a noticable difference in 1/4 times? Because combined they have got to weigh over 40 lbs.

I have it too. It's a giant round cylinder that is kinda suspended between to brackets bolted in the trunk it hangs out in the very back and it's very thick and fortified. I have a pic check it out:

Not the best pic, but you get the idea of how large it is. It's located right behind the amp. This is the prime reason i built two boxes instead of one... I was afraid to remove it

You can remove it. It does nothing. I can't believe you guys haven't found this answer before. I don't even have a GXE and I've seen these posts countless times.

The GXE would 0wn the SE in a game of chicken and/or head on collision with all the extra weight of that cylinder. We're like freakin tanks!!! lol
