What controls the warning light?

The warning light (- the red one that looks like (!) -) was flashing on and off for the last few days now it's just stuck on, does anyone know what controls/activates the warning light so I can try to fix it myself? There are no other lights like engine or oil lit up so i'm assuming they're all OK, it's just the same light that comes on when you pull on the handbrake while the car's on. The car appears to be running perfectly so it's hard to determine what's wrong.

Thanks.

The light also lights up when your brake fluid is low, in addition the contact that shuts the light off when the handbrake is down could have gotten loose or broken.
