strange engine problem
i just bought a really nice maxima for 500 bones. no rust, imaculant interior, but supposedly didnt run. first, i proved them wrong by turning the distributer and managing to make it start. I get no error codes from the ecu. in order to start it, you have to roll it over, and let off the key. then the motor sputters and will come to life. it sputters and misses and drives rather hard until you get the rpms up to about 2 grand, then it runs better, but still misses somewhat. then at around 4 grand it picks up and runs like a bat out of hell. i think it may be the nasty old autolite plugs, that i plan on replacing with nippon denso soon. the guy i bought it from thought it was a sensor. it also stalls sometimes for no apparent reason. it is a 89 max, 5spd. any help appreciated. i have 2 NA 300zx, and 84 and an 86, also a 84 turbo Z. if there are any sensors or parts that may be culprets, that i could pull off one of the Z's to test it, that would help too. thank you

Sounds like the timing setting is wrong. Obviously when you turn the distributor you nudge it closer to being right. Maybe you can turn it further in the direction you turn it in the first place, see if it helped. Also maybe the timing belt jumped (or chain for VE, an timing chain jump too? I'm not sure.), so the valve timing is not right. Just some ideas to try...
