My 89 Maxima developed a transmission problem over the weekend. First time of the day, the trans goes through the gears but does not want to shift to overdrive. When it finally does shift to overdive, nothing is there. It doesnt slip, it is just like it is in neutral. However, if I lock out overdirve and drive it for about a mile, overdive will then come in and the trans. acts normal, with good shifts and everything. What does it sound like is happening? All help is GREATLY appreciated.

fluid is full and looks great with a nice red tint even though it hasnt been changed in probably 75000 miles. FYI

 

The transmission has a feature whereby it will not select overdrive until the ATF has warmed up sufficiently. It is completely normal for it not to select overdrive when it is cold. What is not normal is for it to pick neutral instead! Best suggestion from me would be to try and change the gearbox control unit (mounted above the engine control unit behind the radio). I'm sure somebody here could sell you one cheap.
