Should I try to improve my current car, or wait and get new car?

I just wanted to ask you guys, do you think it'd be best to try and get the most out of my current 91' maxima, by eventually adding cold air intake, new exhaust system, new wheels ... all that other stuff,
or would it be beter to wait a couple years and buy a like 95-97 and start doing it to that stuff? If I do it to the current one, will it add to the eventual sales price of the car, or just be pouring money into it?
I do want to "customize" my car(do little cosmetic things), but not sure if I'd be able to get anywhere CLOSE to the amount of horsepower there is on the newer models.

Re: Beef up older car, or get new?

just mod it for fun...you'd have to drop VERY large amounts of money(or of course nitrous) to get a '91 to match the power of the newer models. just mod the car with the basics and be happy...thats what I decided to do, just throw on the basic mods(intake, exahust, etc.) and do some other thing here and there.

and no, adding mods will make the car less valuable on the public market, maybe on the private seller market, but it'll be harder to sell.

Less valuable! How much did your mods cost you? Did they help much? DO you have any pictures I could see, becuase I haven't really found too many people that have mods for '91's
Would timing kits help quite a bit once I got cold air intake?
Is your car the original color?

go to http://maxima.cardomain.com on the main screen there, you can choose 1991 and look at plenty of 1991 Maximas with mods
you can adjust your timing yourself (see the FAQ post at the top of this forum); search for more info on timing and it's effects - there's tons of threads about it

Here is an important thing to remember..handling improvements will make your car MUCH more enjoyable to drive. THese cars have a great engine, so power isn't too bad even on our single cam engines. The way to make your car perform better is to improve handling. Then you can use the cars power more effectively, like when you make a sharp turn and punch it, instead of the car feeling like it wants to continue straigh and spinning wheels, a car with tight suspension will turn sharp, no body roll, and go when you hit the gas. All the power in the world is useless if you have poor handling and traction.

I have no idea how much my mods have costed do far...I've been doing this over 3 years now, so I'm not sure. but do what Craig said and chek Cardomain's Maxima section and see what everyone is doing to their 3rd gens. and no my car is not the original color, i had it repainted recently from regular charcol gray to Pewter Metallic(aka a lighter gray )
