do bearings fail in pairs?

One quick question...
I recently talked to Courtesy nissan about Front wheel bearing. I said front left has gone bad.

The guy at courtesy say most of the times both left and right go bad together. and it is good idea to replace both of them

Is that right or has it been your experience.. ?:rolleyes

Appreciate your feed back:

unfortunately, it's been my experience that if one bearing is bad, the next is soon to follow. I've replaced both my front bearings twice now, but the first time was a screwup on my part.. make SURE you get the large axle nut to proper torque. not tight enough and the bearing will fail because there's too much play. too tight and the bearing will fail because there's not enough play.

sucks, eh?

It's true, I had both go at the same time, but it goes either both, or one goes, then the other soon after, like Matt said.

huh, I just had this fixed and the mechanic didn't say anything that like i hsould get both done at the same time. Make sense that they'd go at the same time since both wheels are suffering the same wear.

Does it really matter if you get them both done at the same time or seperatly? It's not cheaper doing them at the same time since each bearing has to be pressed out seperatly and the wheel/brakes, etc have to come apart seperate.

I dunno why he didn't know that it will probably go soon, but why not get it fixed at the same time so you don't have to worry about it.

When replacing the bearings is there any other related part that should also be replaced at the same time? Also I had my axles replaced in may and the mechanic hard a hard time putting the new axle back in and told me by looking at the old axle that something was broken inside the transmission. Would a broken bearing cause the failure of the axle.

One last thing estimated labor $$$ for replacing both front bearing?

I'd guess about $75 each on labor.. it'll take about an hour and a half for a decent mechanic. you'll also probably need to get the front end aligned afterwards, but sometimes you'll be okay.

other parts...
dust seals. you'll need 2 for each wheel. an inner and outer.

hub... if the bearing has failed and you drive on it too long, it can ruin the hub as well as the bearing. my hub was so messed up, I didn't even have to press the hub back into the spindle- the hub was worn so much it just slipped in.
My fix for that was to go to the junkyard and buy a used spindle for $40 and put the new bearing in it. (a new hub from the dealer is about $130. entire used spindle is $40. You do the math. )

Hi,
I am trying to figure out what the clicking noise is when driving strait ahead is. Cv changed last year. The clicking noise seems to be comming from the area directly in front of the driver, under the hood. Hoping it is a wheel bearing and not the tranny. Thanks!
