e-brake burnouts, are they safe?
won't work...
Too bad an e-brake burnout wouldn't work on my car because my e-brake is shot. Both my mom, the former owner, and myself have driven for a total of about 10 miles with the stupid thing on. You'd be amazed how easy it is to forget the stupid thing. Anyways, my emergency brake now just functions as a parking brake. If I pull the e-brake and put my car in drive, the car still moves. Oh, well.
1. it won't hurt the brakes at all. they grip harder than that every time you hit the brakes while you're driving.
2. it WILL hurt your tranny.. that's one helluva load to put on it..
3. that's how most front wheel drive cars do burnouts on the track and street.
4. I've done it and if you do it right, you can get lotsa purdy white smoke, but then again it's a quick way to buying new tires and tranny.. be careful and don't be stupid.

getting new tires anyhow

also, matt, I replied to your email you sent me a while back, just curious if you got it?
let's compare e-brake burnouts to smacking a rock with a hammer.. it may not break the first or second time, but eventually, you'll snap that tranny into bits and pieces.
burnouts are some of the hardest things you can do to your tranny..
usually you'll get one wheel spinning much faster than the other, which means parts are slipping inside the tranny.. they are designed for a small amount of this, but not a 20-30mph difference between both wheels. stuff will break soon after. (Talk to JimW about his famous 4th gen burnouts and $4000 tranny rebuild)
nope, haven't gotten any email in several days from anyone from the board.. hmmmm you sure you sent it to the right addy? blehm@utulsa.edu

What about in snow?
Hey, friend of mine and I have a Q about ice b/os. Would the same symptoms be displayed here or does the intense load placed on the motor cause the shattering? I would think on ice it would be like spinning on a dyno or something similar. Very little load on the trans.
a Dyno actually simulates regular dirving very well.. the rollers on the dyno I was on last week weighed 3200lb. most dyno rollers weigh around that much.
sooo, a dyno isn't too much different from regular driving..
the problem on ice is when one tire is on ice and the other is on dry ground.. the one on ice will spin freely and the one on dry ground won't go anywhere.. this is where you have problems and can damage the tranny.
yeah, the transmission is designed to take some of this type of driving, but not constantly, and especially not with the e-brake holding the car back.. baaaaaad news for mister transmission.

u basically floor the gas if u have an auto...or revv up the motor and drop the clutch if u have a manual.
Makes u accelerate slower because u just sit there and spin the tires
Only good thing about a burnout is lots of smoke...not worth killing a trannie over IMO

hey guys, you wanna see a max doin a huge burn out? go here

i used my ebrake, Got both tires goin too. I don't know if the former owner put a limiited slip in it, but i don't think i've ever broken just one loose. If i turn the wheels i'm sure i can break the inside one loose.

I just rememberd...back when i had my taurus SHO i took it up to the local dragstrip like a week after i got it and they were like making fun of a Taurus being there so when i got up to the burnout thing i revved it to 6k and dropped the clutch with the e-brake on...that was one helluva burnout!!! I wasnt keeping the car is why i did it though..im sure that was stressful on it
Has anyone ever thought about the Timing belt--->
Y'know the VG engines have timing BELTS, so when you burnout it can also do some damage. Similar to power braking (Grab e-brake, stomp and hold brake then stomp on the gas...let go of brake) with an auto tranny. If it breaks, it's usually going to take along the valves too, bending the hell out of them. As a result, you will end up paying a lot more than $400 for a new timing belt.
Burnout Consequences:
New Tires
New Timing Belt
New (rebuilt) tranny
New Valves
Possibly a NEW engine.
Burnout "Good things":
Lots of Smoke
The smell!! Ahhhh!...Gotta love it.
