Distributer Cap and Rotor

I have a 91 SE with 68,000 miles. I just had a few things done to it and was overcome with Labor costs for a $13.00 part. I need to have the Dist. cap and rotor replaced. I'm sure that someone on this site has done this B4. I am considering doing it myself. Will it be difficult to do? Any help will be GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Distributer Cap and Rotor

really easy job, just remove the bolts holding on the dist. cap(3 long/skinny gold bolts), remove the distributor cap, (the rotor will be exposed now)find the set screw on the rotor, unscrew the set screw and pull/slide the rotor up, now reverse the process except with the new parts.

pick yourself up a Haynes manual while you're at it, it covers the easy to do procedures like this very well and it'll save you labor charges!

Replacing these parts are simple and should only take a few minutes (if you are handy with a wrench) I don't want to make this sound too easy, but..go to the parts store, if you are hell bent on nissan parts, then get it from the dealer, if not go to one of the large parts chain stores and get the rotor and cap. Bring it home and carefully remove the spark plug wires attached to the old one on the car one at time and place it on the new cap while it is still off the car. (on the cap there will be a number or letter stamped to ensure you don't cross the wires). Now remove the rotor, it is held in place with a small bolt or screw, and place the new one in place, it can only fit on one way. put the new cap in place and fasten it back to the housing..and your done. If you are a little nervous i suggest buyng the chilton's auto repair manual for your year. You will spend about $18 and save about 85 on labor for 5 minutes to work.

When I replace these parts, do I need to check the timing?

you shouldn't have to unless you turned the rotor to advance or retard the timing

i believe there's a 8mm bolt on the rotor..unless u have a small/short screwdrive it's going to be hard to get to. a socket works best here..but on the cap yeah just screws.
