It is available on all 3rd generations if purchased aftermarket. It became part of the Bose Package in 1993 when Nissan changed their stereo package from a 100watt to a 200watt. After market Double DIN's are $$$ cheaper than the Bose and offer more features. Yes, you can hook up an aftermarket system with the Bose amps and speakers. Just make sure the Maximum watt for the headunit is less or equal to the amps. Crutchfield should have some sort of adapter. I purchased a aftermarket CD player because my Bose went out on me on my 100watt Bose system on my 90 maxima. I bought it from Best Buy and they installed it in less than 40 mins.

If you reallly need a new one you can go search e-bay. They always have at least one or two up for auction every week. Just go looking.
