Unclipped Air Box = Burnt ECU
Unclipped Air Box = Burnt ECU
I decided to unclip my airbox today because I wanted a deeper throatey sound (while I wait for my intake to come in), as I was driving, I came to a stop at a stop light, and my idle went REALLY REALLY low, then at the next stop light my car stalled and the check engine light came on. I was like holy CRAP. I popped my hood, jumped out, clipped the airbox back on, and started my car. Good to go. Then all of a sudden I was stopping and the idle needle went to 0 and the back to .5 , sounded like the car was sh*tting the bed.
I brought it to my stealcanic and he said that the ECU was friend and it would cost 80 bucks. I dont understand, unclipping the airbox is the same as having an intake, am I wrong?
Help me out here.

OK, number one, what the hell do you mean exactly by unclipping the airbox. Do you mean flipping the latches and lifting the cover off essentially bypassing the airfilter? If so, not good. Allows crap to get sucked in. Number two, a fried ECU will cost you alot more than 80 duckets. Maybe Mass air meter was damaged. That's all I can think of, as just runnig it with an open filter won't really hurt anything unless somethinig big gets sucked in. Even then, it would get caught in the air meter. Did you look in there?

Most of us have tried "popping" the airbox, right?
Heck, I did it on a brand new Taurus rental car. Sounded pretty cool...till the check engine light went on.

this is the type of thing 16 yr olds do to their cars because it sounds cool, yet they have NO CLUE what they're doing to the car. Just like the idiots that think 6k neutral drops in an auto are cool and just because the tranny has done one, that it can do them all day, every day.
If you want an intake, go out and buy one and pay someone to put it in for you. there are a plethora of resources to finding them. check ebay, check the FAQ threads at the top of this board. call warpspeed, call stillen, call Jim Wolf, call Place Racing, call Courtesy nissan for most of all the above brands.
they're out there, you just have to spend more than 30 seconds shopping for them at your local rice shop. (I'll tell you now they ONLY thing they sell that will fit your are are blue lights and washer nozzle LEDs. both stupid ideas.)

For $20 you can get a generic pop intake on Ebay. Go buy one, PAY someone to put it in (unless you truly throw some effort into researching the Max's engine), and enjoy. Stop with the crippling statements like: ".I want an intake and I want it to sound good, but I cant seem to find an intake for the 94 max, any help? I bought an accord 90-93 intake system someone told me that would work, dont know how to set it up

so im driving a saturn...
its fun to mess around with rental cars, haha like 6k neutral drops and pulling the e brake doing 50mph. ha jk but yeah this brings me to another point, here is a reason why you dont race out corollas, when a stock saturn rental car can spank your tricked out corolla thats not a good sign. i speak from experience
I got smoked by a saturn a few months ago on the highway. I passed him quickly, then saw him coming up on me so I dropped a gear..still coming, dropped another..boy was that pointless..flew right past me..I was like HUH? Musta been the V-6 version. They have like 180 HP I think..the sedan.

1. 81 Maxima wagon 187K miles
2. 90 Subaru Legacy Wagon 120K miles
Now I am a grown-up and I pop the airbox on rental cars and buy intakes for my own.
Again, its filtered air. What is the big deal?

Um, on my vg, if you pop the airbox and lift the cover up with the intake tube/MAF on it, the filter can either stick to that side or stick to the bottom. If it sticks to the bottom, might sound cool but unfiltered air goes in. If it sticks to the top It won't stay there for long. I guess it depends on the setup.

As much as I want to agree with you, some are fast.
My wife got DUSTED by a new Camaro SS in the Max.
Of course, I doubt he will make it to 159K miles and still run as strong as the Max.
