is there any hope at all for a...

First off, hi everyone! i am new here.
my question, is there any hope of me finding a used manual transmission for my 93 maxima? i got a quote for a rebuilt one for like 1300 bucks... so i was really hoping someone would know where to find one, or maybe just a good bet?
btw, anyone here have one laying around?

Good luck...

Do you know what's bad with it?? If you were quoted $1300, chances are you only need the bearings and seals, which come in a kit, and your 'hard parts' are all okay. When you got this quote, was it from a mechanic that actually inspected the internals of the tranny?? If someone gave you a quote on a transmission rebuild and didn't remove it from the car you are getting ripped off, plain as day. You can't 'guestimate' the cost of a rebuild. You are either paying for parts to be replaced that don't need to be or they are ignoring parts that should be replaced and won't be. Trust me, I've been through a few of 'em myself. If transmissions didn't scare me so much I might not be so broke...
Take it somewhere that will look at the thing before they throw out numbers.

Also consider that when you get your tranny rebuilt, assuming the mechanic do a good job on it, you'll get a tranny that's in perfect working condition, all that's bad/worn in it would've been replaced. Whereas if you get an used but not rebuilt transmission from another Maxima, then who knows what condition it's in? Could be near the condition that your current transmission is in.

I just got my max back today

from cottman transmissions. I got bearing and seal kit and clutch and it totaled $1100 bucks. The tranny is not something to screw with so wherever you take it make sure they are reputable and give you a warranty. I got a 12month 24k mile warrany with mine.

Re: I just got my max back today

www.phoenixhardparts.com will give you a completely rebuilt transmission for around $800 with a 6 month warranty. They have a core charge, which you get back when you send your old tranny back to them. If their transmissions are actually as good as they make it seem, this is a phenomenal deal. Check into it.

I have a VSLD 5 speed out of a 94 that I might sell. I was going to do the swap with mine but am not sure if I will since I actually like my auto (I dont race my max-AT ALL)

I am still unsure about what I am going to do but may be interested in selling it.

email me
Michael-H@comcast.net

Here is what I know of it. The car it came out of had the vtc sproket break and destroyed the engine but the trans was good.

Mine is in thier shop now. They are giving me a 5 year warranty. The repair is costing me nearly $3K, though. EVERYTHING was screwed except for the rear half of the case.

I've never seen a tranny explode like that until now. Very bad...

you're lucky. I got skrewd out of $2800 for the same thing with slightly more stuff done and longer warranty. Not that cottman's all bad; I just was unfortunate to run into the wrong employee.

the work was definitely superb and the after sales service is wonderful...BUT! like i said before, i was stupid and gave them a blank check (i told em rebuild and fix anything else that needs fixing...) well i got a new drive train but $2800.....my *** is still sore. The warranty's tite though. lifetime nationwide.

Well then, I guess you really get what you pay for. I don't feel bad about giving them that much money if they are that confident in thier work, especially on a tranny like this one. The Cottman shops I called didn't offer lifetime warranties on my car, but they gave me a 5 year which is way better than anything I had ever hear of. Generally, shops won't warranty the work for as long as you own the car unless you drive an automatic domestic crap box or something...

Check the Ripoff Report on Cottman Transmissions. Alot of negative feedback, but I realize it all depends on which one you go to.

Slippin'

My 93 GXE is an automatic and the transmission has been slipping for several years now. I know that I need to get it fixed, but I'm scared of the bend over and grab your ankles price that I may run in to. Anyone have an opinion as to what kind of cost I may be looking at?

The longer you wait, the more you will have to spend. Get these kind of things taken care of at the first sign of trouble. When you notice trouble, it doesn't necessarily mean your going to take it unlubricated, but if you wait until it's just shot you'd better believe they wont be using the ky!!!
