Oh no! Rusting paint

Hey, I have rusting on the rear driver side. It is right above the tire, someone obviously hit it possibly in a parking lot or something. It is now rusting a bit. Any suggestions? I want to get rid of the rust and paint over it. Is there any technique for this catastrophe?

sand and paint, nothing much lese unless you want to repaint your whole 1/4 panel. it will never completely stop unless you do

Is there a particular kind of sandpaper to use? I know there is a variety of different textures.

depending on how bad the rust is, if it new rust, 220-400 wet dry should be fine, run a lil water over it as youre samding to help ease the rust off and dry as soon as youre done to prevent it from re rusting, paint asap. like i said, it wont stop toe rust, only slow it down

My biggest PITA is that the paint is coming off of my car on the rear bumper cover above the muffler. Is is because something is wrong with my exhaust and the fumes coming from the exhaust is eating away at the paint? WTH?

Only one way to get rid of the rust, and that's to sand it all off down to bare clean metal and repaint. I'm not sure 220-400 grit is harsh enough. To sand rust off metal you need pretty harsh grit...80 or so. Sometimes the rust is even embedded in the metal and is impossible to get off. That's when you need to treat it with with some rust stop type stuff. It'll form a bond with the rust and permanently stop it. Then primer, sand, paint, sand, clearcoat and viola.

Good idea. I will try it out. I am just nervous I may sand it too harshly or not hard enough and it will seem overbearing. Because it is several little scratches, 5 or so, as if a car hit it and scraped it. So, should I sand that whole area down? I don't want to make it worst than it already is.

IF IT DOESNT LOOK TOO BAD THEN JUST FILL IT IN WITH SOME TOUCH UP PAINT. THE ONLY WAY ITLL LOOK 100% AGAIN IS BY HAVING IT DONE BY A SHOP.

mine was peeling pretty bad cos of the snow and other elements, so just b4 winter set in, I sanded the whole bumper down with 220, then 400 i think, then resprayed it with bumper coat paint from oreilly. Wroked pretty good except I still want to add a clear coat or gloss or sumpth cos it's pretty dull and "emulsion-y" right now. and the rest of the car is kinda glossy. At least its better than having a peeling bumper that makes go eeww!
