BMW vs. Max

While a lot of us can give you various estimates on maintenance costs and such for our Max's, you'd be better off getting the Bimmer figures from their forum. I just don't remember what the URL is. Sorry....

As nice as Bimmers and Mercedes (and the like) are, the older they get and the more they get up there in the mileage department, they fall apart quick. An older BMW, Benz, Jag, etc will all be very unreliable (Jag worst of all) compared to a 'common' car. They're also expensive to get parts for.
I'd certainly take an 02 BMW over an 02 Maxima, but in the same breath, I wouldnt take a 92 BMW over a 92 Maxima...

What are you basing this on. I've had my max for five months, it was dealer maintained, and inspected upon purchase, and so far i'm $2500 into it and the tranny's bad, i can buy the beamer for what i bought the max for, are bmw's not known for lasting forever same as the max?

parts and labor are gonna cost you
Big Time for the bimmer!!!!! $$$$$
they will cost you some for the max but more for the bimmer. As for condition it all depends on the car. you are just going to have to buy one and hope it doesnt give you any problems. also check out consumer reports that should help you out a lot. Good Luck

I'd say Bimmer would cost more to maintain. Parts just cost more. And typically German cars need more frequent maintenance (not repair, maintenance) than Japanese cars. The reason why many old European luxury cars fall apart is because later owners who bought them for cheap can't afford to maintain the car the way it's supposed to be. You'll see many of those European cars last a long time and stay in excellent shape when the owners are willing and able to afford to properly maintain them. Jaguars excepted, pre-Ford Jaguars are just plain badly built and engineered.

Hehehe, I know. Strangely though, it's true that after Ford bought Jaguar, Jaguar's quality improved tremendously from before. I wonder if that tells us how bad Jaguar quality was before, or that Ford knows how to make quality cars but was unable or unwilling (for cost reason?) to apply it for its own home market brands.
