Hud Nightmare

i've got some cracks in my windshield, so i went to the local windshield store the other day and guess what... $3300 for a friggin windshield that is HUD compatible. thats right, so for any of you guys looking at putting in a HUD for your ride you better double check the costs of doing it. btw anybody know where i could get one cheaper, i live in bellingham WA.

later

Re: Hud Nightmare

OK this is not a recomendation but a suggestion.

I had a 93Altima with the HUD but the previous owner replaced the windshield with a regular one and I never had a problem with reading the HUD or anyting.

My wife had a wreck in it and the windshield got busted so the body guy replaced it with the correct windshield(had the little square on it for the HUD) and I really didnt notice a difference in it and the old standard windshield (maybe a little blure on the numbers but it was fine)...I mean I didnt even know I had the wrong windshield in it until after the wreck.

Now I do not know if there is going to be a difference for the Maxima but I didnt have a single problem with the standard windshield in the Altima.

isn't there just a sticker thing to reflect the hud? that's weird that you would need a specific window.

no its a little square that is a little different than the rest of the windshield but you can see thru it too unlike a sticker(kinda hard to explain). Like I said though it may be different on the Max since I have never seen one in person.

i know what one looks like, it's just i didn't know it required an entirely different window. i would think they would just put that little bluish see through square on there and be fine, but an entire window difference??

thats what I am saying IT IS NOT A STICKER it is actually PART of the glass. How are you going to put the bluish see through square on if it isnt a sticker but actually part of the glass?

of course I make the disclaimer agian that my experiance is with the Altima and the Maxima may be a little different.

i believe it's embedded into the glass..hence the extra $.

it's not a sticker.

i can attest to it being PART of the glass, the window guy also said that the green reflector is wired somehow. he said the window is somehow plugged into the car and that is how you can see the #'s in the windshield. i tried putting a sticker on the window just to see if it's only projected but that doesn't work. i can still see the #'s behind the sticker but not off it. thats an interesting thought on the regular windshield, thanks for the suggestion and i'll research this little problem more.

from the sounds of it the Max is different because the Altima didnt have anyting pluged into the windshield it was actually projected onto the windshield from below.
