Ive decided not to buy a cheap dash kit and rather do a custom job painting the pieces I want painted. I will first go to junk yard buy some spare parts for test job but in terms of paint does anyone have any brand preferences where to buy online or in stores and detailed instructions if at all possible. Ive heard it is best to multiple thin coats letting it dry overnight each time or using blowdryer but beyond that Im still reading and learning.

 

Plasti-Kote You could use this spray paint and Krylon also, these paints are made for dashboards and such.

Tips on painting:
-clean the pieces real well
-apply two thin coats of primer
-apply two or three thin coats of paint
-apply two thin coats of clear coat
-it is important to give the paint time to dry in between spraying(primer=20 min., paint=1 hr. or more, clear coat=over night)
-also remember that when spraying don't spray directly at it, do it in a sweeping motion from side to side.

If you want pics there should be some in cardomain.

 

You may need to sand the area lightly to with a fine grit paper. I did my dash and it came out way better then any "dash kit" and it only cost about 10-15 for the materials. It will take you a long time though if you do it right. So be patient

 

i did mine but never took pics of them. suff the pieces down so that they have a tooth for the paint to stick to and wash it in warm soap and water(10 plus years of armorall will fish eye paint!). prime and paint. i didnt clearmine and the came out fine, although i had bought the clear. if you mist the paint on you can wait about 15 minutes in between coats and reapply. id the paint is too dry then it wont want to adhere to itself. if it fisheyes then stop, clean scuff and reprimer, that means there is still oil on the panel. have fun!

 

I did mine with sandable primer, Krylon Red spray paint, and clear coat sealer. If you take your time, it will look great and wont crack or fade. If you do a rush job, which we all have seen done, it runs, flakes off and looks horrible. Definately set a whole day to do this. And make sure to buy enough paint... I had to drive to wal-mart without a dash... I've got pictures on my cardomain page.

 

well i did a lot of painting before i got it just right. i changed colors about 3-4 times, using a blow dryer is your best bet, but you have to remember this does not mean you can rush it. it takes a very long time,

-buy good paint! .. no cheep 1.99 per. can sprays.
-CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN! i cant say this anymore dont use sope and water, its much easyer using a cloth (not paper) and WINDEX.
-Spray from far away!..you dont want the paint to start running around one bit, if it does start to run (at all) that part is done. get the windex and clean ALL the paint off as much as you can and start over, if your don't it will look very ugly.
- My paint has been on for almost a year now, and it looks great! after a day or 2 of curing hit it with some armor-all *keeps it nice and shinny*

how do u clean an oil based paint with a water based solution like windex? the idea behind using soap and water is that the soap dissolves grease and doesnt leave any chemicals behind for the paint to react with. if it does run i would say best bet is to let it dry and sand it smooth.

 

WHAT??WWHAT?? ok mr. tec, i said nothing about cleaning paint.

-using "WINDEX" works best to clean the parts before you start to paint them. it takes off all the dust,grime and years of armor-all.

 

OOO ic never mind.. i did say to clean the paint off with windex...( im a dumba$$) yea, if you *** up your best bet is soap and water

 

NCSUmax il check out your page for info im looking to do it in the silver color on the door pieces air vents and some on dash. Id rather buy some paint that will not only last but look good. has anyone else used plasti kote and on what surfaces or if you use krylon do they have interior car paint or buy something for plastic and vinyl surfaces?

 

Painting your interior seems cool for a couple months, then later on you realize it looks dumb. Trust me I've been there.

Not to mention it stains the dash/vinyl. I painted my interior white years ago...did all the dash pieces along with the door pieces. Now there's white rings where all those pieces were. I've long ago gone back to stock, but you can still see the rings. Not cool.

And if you still insist on painting your interior, Plasti-Kote is really really good paint.

And guys, the interior pieces are JUST plastic. Not like since it's on the interior that it's some sort of special plastic as opposed to other stuff. People always freak for no reason about it. So, any sort of plastic paint, car model paint, etc. is going to work fine. Just be sure to clear coat it if the paint requires.

And soap and water is the best way to go, as primitive as it may sound.

 

Painting can look cool--especially in magazines--but whenever I have seen a show car in person, when the interior is paited it looks really cheap. Guaranteed that adding an ounce of paint to your interior equals 1 pound of rice....

I don't have any experience with dying plastic interiors, but wyatt_a2001 in a second generation nissan club has this to say:

"I`ve redone all sorts of interiors, and it works really good if you
use the right stuff. The problem with spray paint is it DOES NOT
stick to plastic or vinyl! What you need is vinyl dye. Being from
Canada, I`m not sure where you would get it in the US but I get it
from Lordco up here. You want SEM color-coat.(www.semproducts.com)
There are cheaper products but trust me they suck. You can even do
carpet and fabric with this stuff. By the way, I work in a body shop
and we use this stuff all the time to paint trim and mouldings and
the like, best of all it costs about the same as buying reg.
primer+paint."

Hmm so that stuff would work on faded door panels, dashs, etc?

 

platikote is my choice for priming my models as it doesnt eat into the plastic so i would use that(im a jack a$$ and didnt when i painted my interior cause there was no pep boys close by.) i agree that it looks cheap, but only of you dont maintain it. i had my interior shot a year ago by a friend and after a year of abuse it looked like crap. prep and paint and it looks great again. ill try to take pics and put then up so that you can see. keep in mind no matter what you use, it is a coat over the existing plastic, so its prone to chip and scratch

 

the only reason i am considering paint is because I have a friend who had his interior painted the same silver color im wanting to get and its been almost 2 yrs
and it still looks good not really scatched up either

 

my paint still looks great... and i night when just the neons hit it its amazing!.. but its getting old, and i want somthing new, so im working on carbon fiber molding every thing
