HELLO I HAVE A 1991 GXE WITH 123,000 MILE ON IT. I PLAN TO CHANGE THE TRANNY FUILD. IS THIS A GOOD IDEA? I'VE HEARD IF U CHANGE THE TRANNY FLUID DOWN THE LINE THE TRANNY IS PROBABLY GOING TO GO? I HEAR THE MELT SHAVING INSIDE THE TRANNY IS WHAT HOLDS IT TOGETHER. ONCE THOSE PARTICULES ARE TAKEN IT OUT, THATS WHEN THE TRANNY STARTS TO SLIP AND HAS PROBLEMS. PLEASE WHAT SHOUDL I DO?

Well...
IMO I'd go for a full tranny flush and refil if you've never got it done before. that way you'll get all the "old" fluid totally out of the system and have plenty of new fluid in there to reinforce it!! you can do a temporary refil(as you're talking about), but remeber there is still some "old" fluid in the internals of the system and all you're doing is replacing the current fluid in the resivoir to go through the internals later! Not to scare you or anything, but my tranny has died 3 times already (first was @ around 120k or so) so I'd look into an auxiliary tranny cooler too.(only $40 or less) but as for our year GXEs thats really the only worry, the tranny, so treat it right and it'll last you a while!!!

flush...
I know to change you take out the plug to drain all the fluid, then put it back in and fill it up with a funnel where the tranny dipstick goes. But, if I want to flush it out also, do I just pour some fluid through with the plug out? how much is adviseable?
thanks

Not regularly, but.....
I'd get it done with every tune-up(as I recently did) just to lengthen the life of your auto tranny since the early Max auto kinda sucked on the reliability side!! As far as I know you gotta go pro with the flush since it involves getting the "old" fluid tottally out of the system(TC as well as the other "internals") but maybe someone has done it themselves, would be interesting to find out how!?

If you have 120k on your tranny and never had it done, I would recommend against it. I would however recommend that you do several iterations of drain and fill. Be sure and let it "wear" a bit between sessions. IMHO you can get problems down the line. I am now experincing problems with my cooling system on my 3mo old 93 w/ 198k+ miles. I believe that my problems are related to a flush as well.
