you shouldn't need a new alt.
Capacitor might be a good idea though.

Unless you have a weak battery or problems with your charging system everything will be ok.

As Sith said, you'll onyl really need a capacitor..
pick up a 1 farad cap and use the biggest power cable you can afford.. I would recommend 2 awg. you can find it at welding supply shops for about $2-3/foot.
it'll be closer to 7-8/ft if you go to a car audio shop.

Hey matt if you have a smaller gauge power cable can it cause problems with your charging system? Like pulling to much power and making your lights dim and acceleration off with the beat?

I was wondering the same

I just got a Rockford 400a4 amp (500+W) with a 10" Rockford XLC. I was wondering the same thing if I was going to have a dimming/charging/alternator problem. From what I've been told just be conservative with the radio level especially with many accesories on, headlights,ac,defroger, etc. Have also heard a good audio set-up shouldn't cause dimming, but if it does a cap. what's recommended. Enjoy

will not effect your charging system or cause dimming. too small wire will create voltage drop to your amp, thereby decreasing output. with a 12 volt system voltage is the key. my sub amp is rated at 100 watts per channel at 12 volts and 150 at 14.4, that is why high quality wires and connevtors are the key, especially in competition. you would need one big freakin amp(or high current amp) to eat up the 95 amps that your alternator puts out.
