big max needs an engine

I got a 92 maxima with the VE30DE engine and I need a new one? Its a long story, but essentially it was driven over a nasty curb and give the underbody a bad jolt and crunched the oil pan. It stall ran after the fact but it did not sound good and all, the oil pressure light came on and everything just got worse. Well, I took it in to my mechanic to figure it out and he fixed up the oil pan. He changed the oil and and did some test and soon found out that there was slim to no oil pressure all of a sudden. I took it to nissan, and they took it apart and came up with the conclusion that it needed an oil pump. That didn't work and they say I need a new engine and owe them $1779 for a car that is dead in the water. My insurance won't cover it because they think it is mechanical failure. Im ****ed, what are my best options??

Burn down the dealership and collect the insurance money from your toasted car

Your mechanical failure was apparently cause by the impact with the curb which should be covered by "comprehensive" coverage, less the deductible. Comprehensive covers things like having your car stolen, a tree falling on your car, or surfing curbs with your oil pan. If you have comprehensive coverage, call your state insurance commission and request a complaint form. Describe your situation, in detail, on the complaint form (and make sure you make it clear that the mechanical failure was a result of the contact with the curb). Fax a copy of the complaint to your insurance company and give them 48 hours to respond and BTW they will respond;
no insurance agent or company wants a complaint in their file. If
you don't hear anything, send the complaint form to the state insurance commission.

Actually surfing a curb would be under collision because he ran into it. Comprehensive is more for "Acts of Nature" and vandals.

But, that is a great idea. They will cover it if you have full coverage.

And when all that's done, shoot me an email. I'm interested in the heads... is it an auto or 5 spd? I might also want the intake manifold, if you don't have to turn the engine in as a core.

i agree with matt

you could sell off the engine in parts, and piece it out. VE's are rare and if you find a good one with parts (which you have) you can sell them off and get some good money.

wow, replacing the oil pump costs $1779 That's insane. Did they give you a quote on that price before doing the work...if not then you probably don't ahve to pay. Most states have laws that mechanics have to give written estimates and get approval before doing any work. If they did give you a quote for that, then I probably would have spoken to my insurance company right away to make sure they'll cover the work. Now, I'd probably just part the engine and try to cover my losses.

It may be hard to prove that the whole issue was caused by running over a curb since you didn't report it right away.

Yeah for the oil pump you must remove the intake manifold, heads, oil pan, and front engine covers. It sucks. Fortuneately they don't go bad too often. Oil pumps are frequently used by dealers to scam you since it sounds scary when they tell you your oil pump is going out.
