Busted exhaust stud

Just wanted to post a thread to say that I got an estimate on getting my rear exhaust manifold leak fixed. Are you ready for this?! 2500 dollars..yes american dollars! Needless to say Im doing it myself next weekend. Im going to go with the head removal method. Looks like pulling the rear cylindar head with manifold on it will be the easiest, especially considering theres a stud busted off in the head. This will be a perfect time to try out the JWT cams! Ill keep ya posted.

Dan,

Please keep me informed as to how it goes. I have a 91, and I noticed that I have two busted exhaust manifold studs on the front manifold. Kinda ****es me off, because it means some mechanic working my car did it and didn't fess up. Guess that's a large part of why I'm working on my car now. BTW, RU changing the exhaust manifold itself? Was it warped at all?

Thanks,

Stephen

I just fixed my front manifold stud. EZ out works really well. Be sure to replace all the studs while you are there. Final cost: $40.

I dont know what to tell you about the rear studs. Those have got to be a huge pain! Keep us posted.

If that shop wants $2500, they are either smoking crack or just didn't want to do it so they gave you a crazy estimate. it's a $300 job.

you don't have to pull the heads, but the rear would probably be easier if you did.

Re: Re: Busted exhaust stud

Usually If you have a busted stud you'll hear the ever popular playing card in the spokes sound. My car sounds terrible, its almost worth 2500 dollars just to get rid of the noise, but not. I want to pull both heads while Im in there. This way I can replace all studs and at a minimum the rear manifold. Chances are since the manifold hasnt been properly secured to the head that with the heat changes its most likely warped. Plus with all new manifolds and studs I shouldnt have to worry about this again for a long time. I may do it this weekend if I can find some help but more likely the next. If I go with the JWT cams Ill have to wait for those of course. Promise you'll be hearing from me soon.
