baffles me

recenlty i was consistantly puttin coolant into reservoir for the radiator and what not.....for some unparticular reason, i decided to take the rad. cap off and look inside....i had some type of jelly sh*t in my radiator.....the only thing i can think that caused this was mixin green antifreeze with that new orange antifreeze.....the car never overheated though, but i flushed it and what not and it was a bunch of that crap in there...so word of advice...do't mix those two antifreezes together!!!

Good to know... Thanks. Just imagine if mixing the two had the same effect as if you'd mixed baking powder (or is that baking SODA???) and vinegar!!

What color was this "jelly"? How long have you owned this car? If it is a greenish gray color then it sounds like it is Bars-Leak that was put in the radiator. Did you put any coolant system leak stop in? It is quite possible the previous owner had the same problem and sloved it with a bottle of Bars-Leak or similar product. I have used Bars-Leak and it works but it is only a temporary solution. in my case I couldn't find the leak (neither could the dealer) and I ended up pumping coolant out the pipe that runs from the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing. It leaves a jelly like substance around the radiator cap.

My $0.02

kinda funny, but the jelly you describe is exactly what is in my radiator.....only thing is i have had my car for 2 years now and i have been the only one to flush and fill my coolant system....since day one when i got the car, there was never this jelly stuff....i tried to do a quick flush when i first came across tha jelly stuff, but it just cleared it up a lil and now its back, but not as thick....when i do the full flush, hopefully it will clear this mess out!!! luckily it hasn't had any bad effects though!!!

Bars-Leak is totally safe IMHO. I have used it in several aging motors (3 Toyotas and 1 Nissan) with 130K or more miles and had no bad results. If the system has never had a full flush before it may well be some Bars-Leak (or other similar product) that still remains in the system. It should clear up if you do a complete flush and refill. Bars-Leak is also supposed to lubricate the water pump. I can't say if that holds any water but I know mine is factory original with 155K and it hasn't hurt it.
